Question 2 :

➢ Describe the different between ethics and law

Answer :

Laws are regulations in the form of norms and sanctions made with the aim of regulating
human behavior in order to maintain order, justice and prevent chaos. Each country has
its own legal rules that are different from other countries, including Indonesia. And,

ethics is something that involves systematizing, and recommending, the concept of right
and wrong behavior such as responsibility to work. Ethics are based on reasoned
standards of right and wrong that determine what humans should do, usually in relation to
certain rights, obligations, benefits to society, justice, or certain virtues.

Being ethical is also not the same as following the law. Laws often incorporate ethical
standards shared by the majority of citizens. But laws, like feelings, can deviate from
ethics. The pre-Civil War slavery laws and the old apartheid laws in South Africa today
are very clear examples of laws that deviate from ethics.
The main difference between law and ethics is that one will not get punished for not
following social ethics, but will rather get socially isolated, whereas one will get punished
for not following the law. Moreover, ethics stand as the fundamental principles for laws in
a country. Law and ethics enhance social decorum and standards in society. Consequently,
people can lead quality lives with peace and harmony. In a way, ethics and law are related
since ethics originated first in society, which then influenced the formulation of the laws.

Key Difference between Law and Ethics :

1) The law is defined as the systematic body of rules that governs the whole society and
the actions of its individual members. Ethics means the science of a standard human
conduct.
2) The law consists of a set of rules and regulations, whereas Ethics comprises of
guidelines and principles that inform people about how to live or how to behave in a
particular situation.
3) The objective of the law is to maintain social order and peace within the nation and
protection to all the citizens. Unlike, ethics that are the code of conduct that helps a
person to decide what is right or wrong and how to act.
