DETAILED LESSON PLAN

(Method used: Direct Instruction)

DLP No. 5
Name: Paula N. Sabalande Grade Level: Grade 8

Code : S8LT-IVi-22 Duration : 1 hour

Learning Area: Science Quarter: IV Date: 02/19/2020
I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
KNOWLEDGE: to explain why energy decreases as trophic level goes higher in the energy pyramid
to construct a food chain in their chosen ecosystem;
SKILL:
to create through it an energy pyramid
ATTITUDE: to engage and listen attentively in the discussion
to inculcate the importance of having autotrophs in an ecosystem where every other
VALUES:
organisms rely on including us.
II. CONTENT : SETS: An Introduction
Competency:    1.1 to describe the transfer of energy through the trophic levels

Trophic Level - feeding position of an organism in a food chain

1st Trophic Level - the plants or other autotrophic organisms
2nd Trophic Level - the primary consumer or Herbivores
3rd Trophic Level - secondary consumers
4th Trophic Level - Tertiary consumers
Biomass - total mass of living organisms in an ecosystem

Energy Pyramid - shows how much energy is transferred from one trophic level to
Key another.
Understanding
to be Law of Conservation of Energy - Energy is neither created nor destroyed, it can only
Developed: be transferred or transformed from one form or another.

Biomass - total mass of living material present in an ecosystem

Biomagnification - the increase in the concentration of pollutants from one trophic

level to another in a food chain.

Bioaccumulation - the accumulation of contaminants or pollution in an organims’s

body which may exceed beyond the normal level of tolerance.

IV. PROCEDURES
 Opening Prayer
 Checking of the absentee and the attendee.
 Give them an adage says “ When you talk, you are repeating what you
4.1
already know. But if you listen, you may learn something new”
Introductory
Activity
 And then, the students will interact with the teacher's kind of game.
(5 minutes)
The teacher will put 3 things on the table and starts pointing each while saying "If
this is one, and this is two, so this is three."

The teacher will:

4.2 Activity Group the class into two and assign them with making a food chain and food pyramid.
(5 minutes) The teacher will give the materials as well as the guide questions for them to answer.
The teacher will then ask a representative for each group to explain their answers.

The students realized that in a food chain, the plants comes first because they
4.3 Analysis can make their own food, and next is the animal that eats plants and
( 2 minutes) third is the one who eats the second. While in food pyramid, the same thing goes
but the plants will be at the lowest level.
4.4 Abstraction
(10 minutes) Interactions in an Ecosystem
All organisms needs energy to sustain life. Every activity that organisms do in
an ecosystems - breathing , moving, running, growing requires energy. The flow of
energy is the most important factor that controls what kind of organisms live in an
ecosystem. This, you will learn how organisms obtain energy through food chains,
food webs, reduction of energy as passes to another trophic level and
bioaccumulation as well.

Organisms in a food chain observe a feeding position called trophic level.

Plants being autotrophs or producers are found in the first trophic level, while the
primary consumers or hervibores on the 2 nd trophic level. Secondary and Tertiary
Consumers are on 3rd and 4th trophic level respectively. Biomass is the total mass of
living organisms in an ecosystem. The energy of each tropic level contain is illustrated
through an energy pyramid. The energy pyramid shows how much energy is
transferred as it flows to another trophic level. Approximately only 10% of its energy
is transferred for the rest is lost in the form of heat, biological process such as
respiration, growth and reproduction.

Decomposers recycle the nutrients or inorganic materials from the dead

organisms but not its energy for it is released as heat. The law of conservation of
energy states that energy is neither created nor destroyed; it can only be transferred
or transformed from one form to another.

Biomagnification is the increase in the concentration of pollutants from one

trophic level to another in a food chain while Bioaccumulation is the accumulation of
contaminants or pollutants in an organism’s body which may exceed beyond the
normal level the body can tolerate.
Lets put it this way class, you had rice and a viand of meat which is pork during lunch
time. The pork which came from pig eats pellets of plants. On the other hand, your
rice is product of a plant.
4.5 Application
(5 minutes) Guide Questions:
1. Which of your food you consider as producers?
2. How about the secondary consumer?
3. How about the tertiary consumer?

The teacher will:

Give a test about today’s topic.

Test I. Identify the word(s) being described. Choose from the words given in the box.

Bioaccumulation Food chain

Biomass Trophic Level
Biomagnification Energy Pyramid

V. ASSESSMENT
(8 minutes) _____________1. Concentration of contaminants or pollution in an organism’s body.
_____________2. Process in which a high concentration of pollutants is present in the
food chain.
_____________3. Total mass of living material present in an ecosystem.
_____________4. Feeding relationship that exists among organisms.
_____________5. Feeding position in the ecosystem.

Test II.
The teacher will let the students make a simple food chain in wherever ecosystem
they like to. They will also make an energy pyramid out of it , label each categories
and their designated trophic level as well.

VI.
ASSIGNMENT Research and do an advance study on the “Biogeochemical Cycles”.
(3 minutes)
6.1 Concluding “Energy makes us moving; nurture and value the ones who give you those but give
Activity thanks and praise to the Almighty God whom both created us”
