POLKA SA NAYON: HISTORY

The polka was among the first dance that was introduced to the Philippine
culture by the early European immigrants who became popular to the Philippines
during the Spanish time especially in the province of Batangas. “Polka Sa Nayon”
basically means Polka in the Village. It is usually danced during town fiestas and in
big social affairs. The dance has an average difficulty, with different variations of the
polka step being used all throughout, with a lively tune to go by it. Polka Sa Nayon is
actually adapted in different regions of the Philippines. In Bataan, Polka Sa Nayon is
known as Polka Tagala, Polka Sala in Mindoro , Polka Italiano in Negros Occidental,
and among Visayans , they call it Polka Antigo.

MUSIC
The Polka Sa Nayon has its own set of music which is composed of three
parts, A,B & C and is counted as “One and Two And” to a measure with a 2/4 time
signature.

FORMATION
Four couples in square formation facing center, Women on Men’s Right side.
Throughout the dance, Men places back of free hand at waist, Women hold their
skirt.

4 a) Partners face audience, inside hands are joined, free hands of girl on
the skirt, and boy has hand on hip.
8 b) Tap right foot on every count of the measure.

4 c) Partners hold in closed ballroom dance position to get ready for

4 a) Starting with left( or right) foot, take 4 polka around clockwise back
to original position. Finish with joined hands extended toward the
center.
2 b) Point left (or right) foot sideward, (count 1); point left (or right)
near supporting foot (count 2). Take one polka step sideward toward
the center.
2 c) Repeat step b starting with right (or left) foot.
24 d) Repeat all actions (a-c) three more times.

Face the center of square, woman on man’s right side, inside hands joined.
4 a) Starting with outside foot, take 2 heel-toe polka steps forward.

2 b) Move one polka step outward (1 measure), then one polka inward
(1 measure)
2 c) Drop inside hands. Starting with outside foot, take 2 polka steps to
turn about outward in place. Finish facing in opposite direction. Join
inside hands, free hands as in beginning.
8 d) Repeat a-c actions starting with inside foot, reverse direction in
steps b and c.
16 e) Repeat all actions (a-d)

4 a) Starting with left(or right) foot, take 4 polka steps clockwise as in
Figure I(a).
2 b) Take 3 gallop steps sideward left(or right) toward front(3
counts),pause(1 count). Do not put weight on the closing foot on the
third gallop step.
2 c) Repeat step b starting with other foot, going on opposite direction.
24 d) Repeat all (a-c) three more times

Partners join inside hands as in Figure II both start with right foot
2 a) Partners take 1 polka step right sideward and 1 polka left
sideward
2 b) Point right foot in front (counts 1) , raise same foot across left foot
in front just above the ankle (counts 2). Point right foot in front
(count 1), steps right close to left foot (counts 2).
4 c) Repeat steps a and b starting with the left foot. Drop inside hands.
Face each other and place both hands on waist
8 d) With right elbows near each other (Jaleo position), take 8 polka
steps forward, turning clockwise twice(4 polka steps each turn).
Finish in proper position
16 e) Repeat all (a-d)

SALUDO MUSIC FINALE


Partners face audience. Join inside hands, free hands as in Figure II
4 a) Starting with right foot, take 4 polka steps forward.
3 b) Girl whirls counterclockwise under arch of arms as many times as
possible, boy stands just in place.
1 c) Drop inside hands. Face and bow to each other or to audience.
