The polka was among the first dance that was introduced to the Philippine
culture by the early European immigrants who became popular to the Philippines
during the Spanish time especially in the province of Batangas. “Polka Sa Nayon”
basically means Polka in the Village. It is usually danced during town fiestas and in
big social affairs. The dance has an average difficulty, with different variations of the
polka step being used all throughout, with a lively tune to go by it. Polka Sa Nayon is
actually adapted in different regions of the Philippines. In Bataan, Polka Sa Nayon is
known as Polka Tagala, Polka Sala in Mindoro , Polka Italiano in Negros Occidental,
and among Visayans , they call it Polka Antigo.
MUSIC
The Polka Sa Nayon has its own set of music which is composed of three
parts, A,B & C and is counted as “One and Two And” to a measure with a 2/4 time
signature.
COSTUME
FORMATION
Four couples in square formation facing center, Women on Men’s Right side.
Throughout the dance, Men places back of free hand at waist, Women hold their
skirt.

MEASURES PATTERNS
4 a) Partners face audience, inside hands are joined, free hands of girl on
the skirt, and boy has hand on hip.
8 b) Tap right foot on every count of the measure.
2 b) Move one polka step outward (1 measure), then one polka inward
(1 measure)
2 c) Drop inside hands. Starting with outside foot, take 2 polka steps to
turn about outward in place. Finish facing in opposite direction. Join
inside hands, free hands as in beginning.
8 d) Repeat a-c actions starting with inside foot, reverse direction in
steps b and c.
