General

General Overview

Introduction
The MCS100 System is a Modular Calibration System for calibra-
tion and maintenance of process instruments, like transmitters, con-
verters, temperature probes, recorders indicators, etc. The system
is designed for instrument/electrical workshops and laboratories.
The MCS100 comprises of a Desktop System or a Bench System.
The modular construction of the system allows the user to custom-
ize the MCS100 System to practically any measurement and cali-
bration application.
The modules in the MCS100 System can be grouped into four main
types:
1. Host modules (Calibrator modules) :
∗ MC5P Multifunction Calibrator module
∗ PC106P Pressure/Electrical Calibrator module
∗ TC305P Temperature/Electrical Calibrator module
2. Assisting modules, divided into:
∗ PO’s, i.e. Manual Pressure Output Modules,
∗ PS’s, i.e. Manual Pressure Supply Modules,
∗ PM’s, i.e. Pressure Measurement Modules and
∗ RTS24P Temperature/Resistance Simulator module
3. Power Supply modules (for the MCS100 Bench System)
4. POC4 Automatic Pressure Output module,
This manual includes a general presentation of the MCS100 Sys-
tem in part A.
Part B concentrates on the Power Supply modules for the MCS100
Bench system.
Part C concentrates on the Assisting modules (PO’s, PS’s, PM’s
and RTS24P)
The Host modules, and the Automatic Pressure Output modules
are covered in separate manuals.

Note
This manual includes a description of all the MCS100 Modular Cali-
bration Systems available, not only the system at hand.

2
General Overview

Unpacking and Inspection

At the factory each new MCS100 System passes a careful inspec-
tion. It should be free of scrapes and scratches and in proper op-
eration condition upon receipt. The receiver should, however, in-
spect the unit for any damage that may have occurred during trans-
port. If there are signs of obvious mechanical damage, package
contents are incomplete, or the instrument does not operate ac-
cording to specifications, contact the purchasing sales office as soon
as possible.
The Modular Calibration System MCS100 is supplied with a gen-
eral instruction manual. The host modules (MC5P, PC106P and
TC305P) and the automatic pressure output controller module
(POC4) have their own manuals. All the modules purchased with
the MCS100 System are installed in the module rack or in the base
unit at the factory. Installation of additional modules that are pur-
chased later on is described in chapter Uninstalling and Install-
ing Modules in the Desktop System on page 8 and chapter
Uninstalling and Installing Modules in the Bench System on
page 20.
If you have to return a module or another part of the MCS100 Sys-
tem to the factory for any reason, include a detailed description of
the reason for the return.

Service
A module that requires service or calibration must be carefully
packed and should be accompanied with a letter or note with the
following information:
User’s name
User’s address
Module name
Serial number
Description of the problem
If the module requires calibration, it must be stated in the enclosed
letter.

3
General

Safety
High voltage is dangerous. Getting into contact with high volt-
ages can result in serious injuries, even death.
The power cable plug shall only be inserted into a socket with
a protective earth contact in accordance with local electrical
rules. The protective action must not be negated by the use of
an extension cord without a protective conductor (grounding).
Make sure that only fuses with the required rated current and
for the specified type (normal blow, time delay etc.) are used
for replacement. The use of repaired fuses and the short cir-
cuiting of fuseholders must be avoided.
Capacitors in the power supply unit may still be charged even
if the power cable has been disconnected.
Sometimes it is necessary to carry out measurements inside
the module rack with the mains power on. Make these mea-
surements with extreme care and remove the power cable im-
mediately after the measurements are completed. The opera-
tion should be carried out by a skilled person who is aware of
the hazard involved.
In the occasion that a module is no longer operating safely, the
module must be taken out of use and precautions must be taken
against accidental use

Safe use is no longer possible in the following cases:

- When the module has a clear visible damage
- When the instrument is not functioning as expected
- After prolonged storage in unfavorable conditions
- After serious damage during transport
Warnings concerning pressure modules are presented in part C of
this manual.

MCS100 Desktop System

General
The base unit of the MCS100 Desktop System contains the cabinet
with a 19” frame for the modules, mains power supply, instrument air
supply and necessary connectors on the rear panel.
In the base unit virtually any combina-
tion of the host modules and assisting
modules can be installed.

The base units come in two heights: BU4 and BU8.

Environmental Specification

6
MCS100 Desktop System

Taking the Desktop System in use

Connect the mains to the MCS100. Switch on the host module(s)
and check if they go through their self test successfully. Switch on
possible other modules with a mains switch.
If any problems appear during the startup, please contact the manu-
facturer or your local representative
Connect the pressure supply to the rear of the station. Pressure
supply is required for pressure output modules. Please observe the
following requirements before connecting the pressure supplies.
Instrument air supply
The calibration station requires clean, dry and oil free instrument
air supply. Filtering of the pressure supply is included in the base
unit. Maximum allowed supply air pressure is 10 bar gauge (145
psi). The filter may be located according to user’s needs, but it needs
to be part of the pressure supply system at all times.
To minimize the danger of flying fragments in the event of a plastic
bowl failure, DO NOT REMOVE THE METAL BOWL GUARD of
the supply air filter. Certain compressor oils, chemicals, solvents,
paints and fumes can cause plastic bowl failure. Depressurize the
unit before removing the metal guard and bowl for service.
High pressure supply
For high pressure output modules there’s a separate supply input
connection. The maximum supply pressure is stated on the back
panel of the MCS100. For the PO20 pressure output module the
maximum supply pressure is 230 bar (3500 psi). For the pressure
output modules PO60, PO160 and PO250 the maximum supply
pressure is 400 bar (6000 psi).

High pressure is always dangerous! Read carefully the warn-

ings presented in Part C of this manual.

Uninstalling and Installing Modules in the Desktop System

Warning!
Disconnect the mains cable and the pressure supply to your
MCS100 before you install or uninstall any modules.
The module uninstallation/installation must be carried out by
personnel qualified for electrical and pneumatic installations.
Refer to chapter 1.4 Safety for more specific information on
precautions during installation and uninstallation of modules.
Before you uninstall any modules from the MCS100, the following
preoperations should be done:
• Disconnect the mains supply from the MCS100.
• Disconnect the supply pressure from the MCS100.
• Disconnect the vacuum supply (if in use) from the MCS100.
• Dismount the rear panel plate of the MCS100 chassis by
opening the four screws.
If your Desktop System is a BU8 Base Unit (it has modules
stacked on each other), the rear panel consists of two metal
plates, each fastened with four screws. In that case, dis-
mount all of the plates.
To uninstall a module
• Disconnect all the cables and tubes connected from the mod-
ule to be uninstalled to the rear panel. Refer to the picture of
internal connections below.
• Open the screws in the front plate of the module to be
uninstalled (four or more screws, depending on the module).
• Pull out the module.
Installing a module requires opposite steps.

As the internal connections inside an MCS100 Desktop System
depend on the modules installed, it isn’t possible to present all the
combinations. The following picture is an example of internal con-
nections with an MC5P host module, and ET Module and two pres-
sure measurement modules. For readability reasons, the internal
pressure supply connections as well as the internal power supply
connections are not shown. Another picture of internal connections

Connecting the Workstation to the Electrical Network

Warning!
Before connecting the MCS100 Module Rack to the mains,
check that the mains voltage is as marked on the MCS100 rear
panel of the Module Rack.
1. Become familiar with the electric circuit diagram of the Main
Supply module (presented in Part B of this manual).
2. The frame of the table must never be earthed and it must not
get into contact with a conductive material (for example a ra-
diator or water pipes).
3. Be sure that all the ON-OFF -switches in the module rack are
switched OFF.
4. Connect the power cord to an earthed AC outlet.
5. Turn the main switch of the workstation (located in the EPS10
Main Supply module) ON. Check the voltage from the outlets
of the module rack with a voltage meter (remember to check
that the automatic fuses are in position I).
6. If any problems appear during the startup, please contact the
manufacturer or your local representative.

Connecting the Workstation to the Pressure Supply

Connect the pressure supply to the rear of the module rack. Pres-
sure supply is required for Pressure Output Modules. Please ob-
serve the following requirements before connecting the pressure
supplies.
Instrument air supply
The MCS100 Bench System requires clean, dry and oil free instru-
ment air supply. Filtering of the pressure supply is included in the
base unit. Maximum allowed supply air pressure is 10 bar gauge
(145 psi).
The default installation place for the filter is on the rear side of the
Module Rack (see picture on page 21). The filter may be located
according to user’s needs, but it needs to be part of the pressure
supply system at all times.
To minimize the danger of flying fragments in the event of a plastic
bowl failure, DO NOT REMOVE THE METAL BOWL GUARD of the
supply air filter. Certain compressor oils, chemicals, solvents, paints
and fumes can cause plastic bowl failure. Depressurize the unit
before removing the metal guard and bowl for service.

18
MCS100 Bench System

High pressure supply

For high pressure output modules there’s a separate supply input
connection. The maximum supply pressure is stated on the back
panel of the MCS100. For the PO20 pressure output module the
maximum supply pressure is 230 bar (3500 psi). For the pressure
output modules PO60, PO160 and PO250 the maximum supply
pressure is 400 bar (6000 psi).
High pressure is always dangerous! Read carefully the warn-
ings presented in part C of this manual.

Use of the Workstation

Pay attention to the things mentioned in the following list:
1. An appliance that you are going to open for service or
maintenance must always be connected to an isolated outlet
marked:
“ISOLATED. FOR ONE DEVICE ONLY”
Such an outlet is e.g. on an HL40TS module. This outlet
must not be used for other purposes. Other outlets in the
supply unit or under the module rack must not be used for
service or maintenance.
2. Connect other measuring instruments to the outlets marked:
“FOR MEASURING INSTRUMENTS 230 V AC”
or to the outlets under or in front of the module rack.
3. It is advisable to switch off the power from the supply unit
when the workstation is not in use, e.g. overnight.
4. If you’re going to open the lid of the module rack, be sure
that the voltage cannot be switched on to the modules inside
the module rack. The voltage must always be switched off
before opening the lid.

TL303, TL 3035 and TLL 303 Variable DC Supplies

Operation
Switch the power on in the Main Supply Module. Switch the power
supply on from the mains switch in the module. The indicator light
should switch on. Check that the adjusted voltage is at its minimum
with the help of the digital meter. If necessary, turn the voltage ad-
juster counterclockwise until the voltage is zero. Adjust the current
limit to a suitable level. Connect the load to the terminals. Adjust
the voltage to the required level.

Output current
The output current can be controlled with the lower potentiometer .
The output current is displayed on the lower digital meter. If the
output current is below the set value of the current adjuster, the
power supply is in constant voltage mode and follows the setting of
the voltage adjuster. When the output current reaches the set value
of the current adjuster, the power supply switches to constant cur-
rent mode and the current limitation LED is lit. In constant current
mode the voltage is lower than (or equal to) the set value of the
voltage adjuster, and the power supply follows the setting of the
current adjuster.

Short circuit protection

The modules is short circuit protected. Even a long term short cir-
cuit cannot damage the power supply.

Parallel and serial use of the power supplies

The serial use of the power supplies gives a possibility to reach the
required voltage by adding together voltages of two or more power
supplies. The current limitations of all the power supplies should be
equal within 0.5 A.
In parallel use of two power supplies, one of the supplies can be set
in current mode at about half the wanted current value and voltage
set a little higher than the required level. Set the other power supply
in voltage mode at the required voltage and set the current limit a
little higher than on the other power supply.

Note
The polarity of the power supplies have to be right during par-
allel and serial use.

maximum continuous current is 4 A
OVP Over Voltage Protection
Adjustable from 1V to 250V.
Mode Select between U-stabil or Static mode.
In U-stabil mode the voltage supply will keep the
output voltage as stable as possible although the
supply voltage or the load is varying.
In Static mode the output voltage will be “locked”
and the device will not automatically try to adjust
the output voltage to the selected value. This
means that the voltage will vary if the supply
voltage changes. The output voltage will also drop
if the load is increased (due to the module’s
internal impedance).
OC time Time before the module is shut down in case of a
short circuit or over current.
The value is adjustable from 0 to 400 seconds.

To advance from one setting to another, press repeatedly the func-

tion key beside the display. After showing the last setting, the dis-
play returns to show all main settings at the same time.

Assisting Modules

General
This part includes the description of the following MCS100 Mod-
ules:
* Pressure supply module PS7,
* pressure output modules (PO’s),
* pressure measurement modules (PM’s) and
* Temperature/Resistance Simulator Module RTS24P.
These modules have a common name: Assisting Modules. That
is because they are usually supporting the host module MC5P. As-
sisting Modules are seldom used alone although some of them may
be used as stand-alone modules too.
Please note that this manual decribes all the above mentioned As-
sisting Modules. Not all of the modules are necessarily included in
your MCS100 System.

50
General

Warnings When Using Pressure Modules

Do not direct air jet to your skin or block air pressure with your
fingers. Air may penetrate the skin and cause injury, even death!
All the Pressure Modules are electrically connected to the
MCS100 chassis as well as to the Pressure/Electrical Host
Module and it’s electrical measurement terminals. To prevent
electrical ground loops, use only non-conductive pressure tub-
ing and non-conductive pressure medium. A Current loop via
the pressure input/output may cause erroneous measurement
readings or even calibrator damage.
When connecting an instrument to the pressure output of a
pressure output module, make sure that the pressure is not
too high to damage the instrument.
If you open the valve below the pressure adjustment knob when
an instrument is connected to the pressure output connector,
make sure that the precision pressure regulator is adjusted to
a pressure that can not damage the instrument under calibra-
tion.
When checking a process device, take care that it does not
contain process fluid or particles. When you VENT a Pressure
Output Module, the fluid or particles might flow into the mod-
ule possibly damaging it. If you are not sure that the tubing and
the instrument measurement chamber are empty, use a proper
collection chamber and/or filter between the instrument and
the module.
Always depressurize the system before opening or connecting
any pressure fittings or connectors. Use proper valves for vent-
ing the system. Never connect the Hydrotech pressure tubing
to a pressurized connector even when the connector is
equipped with a valve that closes when the tubing is removed.
Use hand tightening with the Hydrotech high pressure tubing
connections.
Minimum bending radius for the delivered Hydrotech high pres-
sure tubing is 20 mm.
At low and medium pressure range you can use gas as the
pressure medium. When using gas, the system must not con-
tain any liquid, especially if you do not know how they may
react under high pressure. Use of clean air or nitrogen is rec-
ommended.
Do not use the same tubing with different liquids and gases.

51
Assisting Modules

Additional Warnings When Using High Pressure Modules

High pressure is always dangerous. Only personnel with good
experience and knowledge of high pressure liquid, air and ni-
trogen operations are allowed to work with the module. Read
carefully all these instructions and local safety instructions for
high pressure operations before starting the use.
If you use nitrogen, minimize the leak to the atmosphere and
take care of sufficient ventilation. Close the valve of the nitro-
gen cylinder, when the system is not in use. Increase in the
percentage of nitrogen in the ambient air may cause uncon-
sciousness and death without warning. Read carefully the
safety instructions for nitrogen and make sure that the other
people in the same space are aware of the danger.
Check what the local regulations say about construction and
use of pressurized vessels. The regulations normally control
construction and use of systems where the product of the pres-
sure and volume exceeds a certain limit. The volume of this
system depends on the instrument connected to it.
High pressure gas is dangerous because it can break the con-
tainer and the flying splinters may cause injury. Also small leaks
of gas may be dangerous because the high velocity of the leak-
ing gas jet enables penetration through skin. If a gas bubble
gets into the blood circulation, it can cause death. The leak jet
is particularly penetrative, if some liquid is coming with the
gas.
Maximum pressure for the delivered Hydrotech high pressure
tubing is 400 bar g/6000 psi g at -20 to +50°C. Minimum bend-
ing radius of the tubing is 20 mm.
Use of liquid pressure medium is recommended with pressure
measurement modules at higher pressure range (not applicable
for pressure output modules). Use water or suitable hydraulic
oil. Check from the module specification, that the used liquid
is not aggressive against the materials used in the transducer
or tubing When using liquid, minimize the amount of air in the
system. So you can minimize the amount of spilled liquid in
case of leakage.

52
Pressure Connections

Pressure Connections
Pressure output modules, Pressure supply module and pressure
measurement modules have the following connectors.
For pressures up to 250 bar
The connector is delivered as shown in the leftmost picture below.
The connector includes an adapter to make it easy to connect pres-
sure hoses delivered by Beamex. By removing the adapter a stan-

Pressure Output Modules

The pressure output modules are designed to produce very accu-
rate pressures when calibrating pressure instruments. For pressures
up to 20 bar (290 psi) an adjustable volume is used to help achiev-
ing the exact pressure. Needle valves are used in high pressure
modules.

For pressure connector info, see chapter Pressure Connections

on page 53.
Typically, a high pressure cylinder is used for providing the required
supply pressure. The use of liquid pressure medium is not pos-
sible.

Operation
Ensure that the regulated pressure is set to zero by turning the
PRESSURE ADJUST knob counterclockwise. Close both needle
valves (marked INCREASE and DECREASE).
Connect the output pressure to the instrument under test and to a
suitable pressure measurement module.
To regulate the pressure, use the PRESSURE ADJUST knob. Ob-
serve the pressure value from the gauge meter marked REGU-
LATED PRESSURE. Open the needle valve marked INCREASE
slowly. Follow the pressure increase on the pressure calibrator’s
display. When the pressure is set, close the INCREASE valve.
To decrease or vent, open the needle valve marked DECREASE.
The output pressure of the regulator should be set to zero and the
needle valves marked INCREASE and DECREASE should be
closed.

Notes!
High pressure is always dangerous. Read carefully the instruc-
tions in chapter Warnings When Using Pressure Modules on
page 51 and chapter Additional Warnings When Using High
Pressure Modules on page 52.
Excessive closing force will damage the valve seat causing
leakage.

Connections
The PO60/PO160/PO250 module is connected to the MCS100 chas-
sis via the supply pressure hose. Usually the output of the vent
valve is unconnected.
Refer to part, A chapter Internal connections in this manual on
how the supply pressure is connected to your MCS100 as the con-
nection depends on the type of your MCS100.

Maintenance of the Pressure Output Modules

When properly used the Pressure Output Modules should not re-
quire any regular service. In case service is required, contact
Beamex or your local representative.
The high pressure regulator in the Pressure Output Modules PO20,
PO60, PO160 and PO250 may need service if the supply gas is not
perfectly clean. If you are not qualified for this kind of service, con-
tact Beamex or your local representative.

Installing and uninstalling a Pressure Supply Module

The installation/uninstallation of a Pressure Output Module depends
on the type of your MCS100 system. Both the installation/
uninstallation of modules on a MCS100 Desk are described in part
A of this manual.

Installing and Uninstalling Pressure Measurement Modules

How to install or remove a module from your MCS100 chassis de-
pends on the type of your MCS100 System. Refer to part A of this
manual on how to install/remove modules.

Warning!
Disconnect the mains cable and the pressure supply to your
MCS100 Bench System before you install or uninstall any mod-
ules.

Removing a Pressure Measurement Module

The Pressure Measurement Modules
are connected only to the MC5P host
module. To disconnect the 20 pin con-
nector from the Pressure Measurement
Module:
1. Pull the locking hooks away from
1
the cable connector
2. Pull the cable connector up
2
Remove the module from the MCS100
chassis as described in part A
The MC5P Host Module can be used 1

without the removed module, if neces-

sary. At startup MC5P automatically
identifies all the pressure modules cur-
rently connected to it.

66
Pressure Measurement Modules

Adding a Pressure Measurement Module

The MC5P Host Module automatically identifies all the pressure
measurement modules connected to it. When you add a pressure
measurement module to the MCS100 System, be sure that its ID
number differs from the other modules present. The following pic-
ture explains where to change the ID number.

The Pressure Measurement Module communicates with the MC5P

Host Module via a flat data cable. The standard cable supplied with
an MCS100 system can communicate with four Pressure Measure-
ment Modules (the cable has 4 connectors in series). The Host
Module can communicate with 10 Pressure Measurement Modules
if an adequate cable is available. When ordering more Pressure
Measurement Modules from Beamex or your local representative,
check if your communication cable has free connectors or not.
To connect the communication cable to the Pressure Measurement
Module, push the cable connector into the respective connector in
the Pressure Measurement Module. The connectors lock together
with a “click”.
After installation, switch on the MC5P Host Module and check the
electrical function of the new pressure module by selecting it from
its selector key.
