Spain
He arrive Barcelona, Spain where he met some Filipinos. He also
made his first nationalistic essay he wrote abroad “ Amor Patrio”
which was later published in Diarong Tagalog. To complete his
studies and widen his political knowledge through exposure to
European Governments.
Hongkong Rizal left Europe for Hong Kong on board the ship “ Melbourne” on
which he began writing his third ( but unfinished) novel. In Hong
Kong , Jose opened a medical clinic.
Singapore The first stop over of Rizal on his way to Spain is Singapore, which he
spent for sightseeing the city including its famed Botanical Garden,
Buddhist temples, the monument of Sir Thomas Stanford Raffles, the
founder of Singapore
Colombo, Sri Lanka It was Rizal’s journey to Colombo, Sri Lanka that was important for him
to improve his knowledge of the French Language while on board a
French ship, D jemnah.
Sandakan He went to Sandakan (East Malaysia) a board “Menon” to

negotiate with British authorities concerning the founding
of a Filipino colony in North Borneo (now called Sabah).
Ghent Rizal went to Ghent in July 1891 because the cost of

printing in the place is cheaper. He lived in a low-cost
boarding house where he had as roommate Jose
Alejandro, on engineering student in the University of
Ghent.
Egypt In Marseilles, En route through the Suez Card. Rizal got off
at the Red Sea terminal and was amazed by the
impressive moonlight scenery in Suez and was engrossed
with the multicultural people and language of the place.
France Rizal arrived at France for the first time at Marseilles,

where he visited the Chateau d’lf, the fortress famous as
the setting for Alexandre Dumas “ The Count of Monte
Cristo”
Biarritz, Paris and Brussels Rizal proceeded to take a more than a month vacation in
Biarritz, a tourist town in South western France noted for
its mild climate and sand beaches. In Biarritz, he continued
to worked on his “El Fili” and completed its manuscript on
March 29, the eve of his short stay in Paris.
Madrid Rizal travelled to Madrid in Aug. 1890. Along with his

lawyer , Marcelo H. Del Pilar, he tried to seek justice for his
family but could not find anyone who could help him.
Italy Rizal reached Naples, Italy and was briefly astounded by

its dynamic citizens and the picturesque wonders of the
municipality particularly the Mount Ve suvius and the
Castle of St. Telmo
Belgium In Belgium, Rizal busied himself with writing the “fili” and
contributing for “La Solidaridad” using the pen names
Dimas Alan gang Laonglaan.
London In London, Rizal manually copied and annotated Marga’s

“Sucesos de las Islas Filipinos”, a rare book available in
the British Museum.
Austria In Vienna, Rizal was met by a Famous European novelist,

Norfenfals, who toured him to the churches, art galleries
and other tourists spots in the city especially along the
Danube Rivera.
Paris, France Rizal visited the French capital of France, where he was
fascinated by its architectural wonders( e.g Place de la
Concorde and the Arch of Triumph ).

-Rizal visited many countries Rizal as a traveller was not merely a spectator he was very observant of
the lifestyle of the people. This was evident through his diary entries wherein he wrote his
observations of culture and other things .Rizal knew how to live in a country away from his home.
During his travel, he met a lot of people and not just mere people but professionals including
professors and doctors. He was also a smart traveller because he learns the language of the country
he stays. So this made him communicate effectively. Because of his broad knowledge of different
culture he learned a lot from his journey in abroad. So because of that Rizal published his novel which
is the “Noli me tangere” and “ El Fili” .
