1.0 SCOPE
This specification defines the minimum suggested ordering requirements for seamless 304/304L dual certified
tubing intended for use with Swagelok tube fittings.

3.0 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS


3.1. UNS S30400/S30403 stainless steel tubing shall be supplied as average wall thickness ± 10%, and in
accordance with the following:
 ASTM A213 / ASME SA213 (Ref. 2.1)
 ASTM A269 (Ref. 2.3)
 ASTM A1016 (Ref. 2.5)
 ASTM A632 (1/8 inch tubing and smaller, 3 mm tubing and smaller) (Ref. 2.4)
3.2. Tubing shall be suitable for bending and flaring.
3.3. Tubing shall be manufactured free of mercury contamination.

4.0 CHEMICAL COMPOSITION


4.1. Material shall meet the following chemical requirements for UNS S30400/S30403 listed in ASTM A213 /
ASME SA213 (Ref. 2.1), ASTM A269 (Ref. 2.3), or ASTM A632 (Ref. 2.4).

5.0 MECHANICAL PROPERTIES


5.1. Tubing shall be solution heat treated to a minimum of 1900°F (1040°C) with water cooling or other rapid
cooling.
5.2. Tubing larger than 1/8 inch shall meet the mechanical properties requirements listed below for UNS
S30400/S30403 listed in ASTM A213 (Ref. 2.1) or ASTM A269 (Ref. 2.3).
5.3. 1/8 inch and smaller tubing shall meet the mechanical properties requirements listed below for UNS
S30400/S30403 listed in ASTM A632 (Ref. 2.4).
 Tensile Strength, min 75 ksi [515 MPa]
 Yield Strength, min 30 ksi [205 MPa]
 Elongation in 2" or 50 mm, min 35%
 Hardness, max 90 HRB [200HV]

6.0 INSPECTION AND TESTING REQUIREMENTS


6.1. Chemical analysis shall be performed in accordance with ASTM A1016 (Ref. 2.5).
6.2. Mechanical properties testing shall be performed in accordance with ASTM A1016 (Ref. 2.5) including:
6.2.1 Tensile test, 1 sample for lots ≤ 50 tubes, 2 samples for lots > 50 tubes
6.2.2 Flattening test, 1 sample per lot
6.2.3 Flaring test, 1 sample per lot

6.2.4 Hardness test, 2 samples per lot


6.3. Each tube shall be subjected to the Nondestructive Electric Test (eddy current) or the hydrostatic test in
accordance with ASTM A1016 (Ref. 2.5).
6.4. Tubing shall be capable of passing corrosion testing in accordance with ASTM A262 Practice E (Ref 2.2).

7.0 FINISH
7.1. Tubing shall be seamless, cold drawn or pilgered, fully annealed, and straightened (straightened not
applicable to coiled tubing).
7.2. All tubes shall have a uniformly polished OD (may not be applicable to coiled tubing) finish free of
scratches. Selective grinding is not permitted.
7.3. Tubes shall be pickled free of scale. When bright annealing is used, pickling is not necessary.
7.4. Finished tubes shall have ends free of burrs and the inside surface shall be free of dirt, chips, oil, scale or
corrosion.

8.0 DIMENSIONS
8.1. Tubing shall be either 20 feet or 6 meters in length, as specified on the purchase order and to the
tolerances of ASTM A632 (ref. 2.4) and ASTM A1016 (ref. 2.5) listed in the table below.

8.2. Ovality / Out-of-roundness shall not exceed 0.005 inches.


8.3. Straightness of each tube shall not exceed 0.030 inches maximum curvature in any 3 foot span.

9.0 MARKING
9.1. Tubing shall be line marked in accordance with the requirements of ASTM A213 (Ref. 2.1) or ASTM A269
(Ref. 2.3), and ASTM A1016 (Ref. 2.5), including the material specification and grade, condition, wall
designation, outside diameter, wall thickness, (melt) heat number, and lot number.
9.2. All tubing sizes shall be line marked, with the exception that tubing smaller than ¼” and 6mm in diameter
may be tagged in lieu of line marking.
9.3. Line mark manufacturer. Line mark country of origin if not made in the USA.

10.0 CERTIFICATION
A Certified Material Test Report from the tube manufacturer shall be furnished with each shipment with the
following additional requirements:

10.1. Chemical composition, both ladle and product analysis test results, in accordance with section 4.0.
10.2. Tensile test results in accordance with sections 5.2 and 5.3.
10.3. Flattening test results in accordance with section 6.2.2.
10.4. Flaring test results in accordance with section 6.2.3.
10.5. Hardness test results in accordance with section 6.2.4
10.6. Results of eddy current or hydrostatic testing in accordance with section 6.3.
10.7. Results of corrosion testing in accordance with section 6.4, if conducted.
