Introduction To Computing

The document discusses the different types of computers. It defines a computer and provides a brief history. It then describes seven main types of computers: super computers, mainframes, server computers, workstation computers, personal computers, microcontrollers, and smartphones. For each type, it provides a short definition and example use cases. The document was submitted by Aneela Aftab for her Introduction to Computing course. It provides an overview of the different categories of computers based on their capabilities and typical uses.

Types of computer
What is computer?

A computer is a machine or device that performs processes, calculations

and operations based on instructions provided by a software or hardware program. It has the ability to
accept data (input), process it, and then produce outputs. Computers can also store data for later uses in
appropriate storage devices, and retrieve whenever it is necessary. Modern computers are electronic
devices used for a variety of purposes ranging from browsing the web, writing documents, editing
videos, creating applications, playing video games, etc. They are designed to execute applications and
provide a variety of solutions by combining integrated hardware and software components

HISTORY OF COMPUTER:-

The first use of the word “computer” was recorded in 1613 in a book called “The young man’s gleanings”
by English writer Richard Braithwaite” I have read the truest computer of Times, and the best
Arithmetician that ever breathed, and he reduced thy days into a short number.” It referred to a person
who carried out calculations, or computations, and the word continued with the same meaning until the
middle of the 20th century. From the end of the 19th century the word began to take on its more
familiar meaning, a machine that carries out computations.

Types of computer :-
Computers are also categorized on the basis of physical structures and the purpose of their use. Based
on Capacity, speed and reliability they can be divided into seven categories of computers.

 Super computer
 Mainframe
 Server computer
 Workstation computer
 Personal computer or PC
 Micro controller
 Smartphone
 SUPER COMPUTER:-
Supercomputers are one of the fastest computers currently available. Supercomputers are
very expensive and are employed for specialized applications that require immense amount
of mathematical calculations (number crunching).

For example, weather forecasting, scientific simulations, (animated) graphics, fluid dynamic
calculations, nuclear energy research, electronic design, and analysis of geological data
(e.g. in petrochemical prospecting).

 Mainframe:-
Mainframe is very large in size and is an expensive computer capable of supporting
hundreds or even thousands of users simultaneously. Mainframe executes many
programs concurrently and supports many simultaneous executions of programs.

 SERVER COMPUTER:-
A server is a computer that provides data to other computers. It may serve data to systems on a local
area network (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN) over the Internet.
Many types of servers exist, including web servers, mail servers, and file servers. Each type
runs software specific to the purpose of the server.

 Workstation computer:-
Workstations are high-end, expensive computers that are made for more complex
procedures and are intended for one user at a time. Some of the complex procedures
consist of science, math and engineering calculations and are useful for computer
design and manufacturing. Workstations are sometimes improperly named for marketing
reasons. Real workstations are not usually sold in retail, but this is starting to change;
Apple's Mac Pro would be considered a workstation.
The movie Toy Story was made on a set of Sun (Sparc) workstations.

 PERSONAL COMPUTER OR PC:-

A PC or Compact computer that uses a microprocessor and is designed for individual

use, as by a person in an office or at home or school, for such applications as word
processing, data management, financial analysis, or computer games.
 Micro controller computer:-
Microcontrollers are mini computers that enable the user to store data and execute
simple commands and tasks. These single circuit devices have minimal memory and
program length but are normally designed to be very good at performing a niche task.
Many such systems are known as embedded systems. The computer in your car, for
example is an embedded system. A common microcontroller that one might come
across is called Arduino.

 SMARTPHONE:-
Smart phone is also a computer. Most smartphones run iOS or Android. Android is an operating
system that is based on Linux. Smartphones are becoming exponentially faster and also have an
exponentially increasing data capacity. These two devices have many limitations such as
processing power, memory, energy usage and screen size. They also have different input
methods such As;

(1) Numeric keypad

(2) Small QWERTY keypad with navigation keys or touch gestures,
(3) An onscreen and
(4) Voice input
