The ability of a building to withstand the stress of an earthquake depends

upon its type of construction, shape, mass distribution, and rigidity. Different
combinations are used. To reduce stress, first, the building's ground floor must be
flexible. One method is to support the ground floor with extremely rigid, hollow
columns, while the rest of the building is supported by flexible columns located
inside the hollow columns. A different method is to use rollers or rubber pads to
separate the base columns from the ground, allowing the columns to shake parallel
during an earthquake. Next, the outdoor walls should be made with stronger and

The Children of the Limokon

Mandaya (Mindanao)
In the very early days before there were any people on the earth, the
limokon (a kind of dove ) were very powerful and could talk like men though they
looked like birds. One limokon laid two eggs, one at the mouth of the Mayo River
and one farther up its course. After some time these eggs hatched, and the one at
the mouth of the river became a man, while the other became a woman.
The man lived alone on the bank of the river for a long time, but he was
very lonely and wished many times for a companion. One day when he was
crossing the river something was swept against his legs with such force that it
nearly caused him to drown. On examining it, he found that it was a hair, and he
determined to go up the river and find whence it came. He traveled up the stream,
looking on both banks, until finally he found the woman, and he was very happy to
think that at last he could have a companion.
They were married and had many children, who are the Mandaya still
living along the Mayo River.

 The Myth of Echo
Echo was a nymph who talked too much. She was very fond of having the last
word. One day she spoke rudely to the great Juno, who said that for this offense Echo
should never use her voice again, unless to repeat what she had just heard, but since
she was so very fond of last words, she might repeat the last words of others. 
This was almost as bad as if Juno had changed her into a parrot. Echo was very
much ashamed, and hid herself in the forest. 
Narcissus, a young man who had hair as yellow as gold and eyes as blue as the
sky, - a very rare thing in Greece, where most people were very dark, - used to hunt in
the forest where Echo was hiding. As she was peeping out shyly from some cave or
from behind a great tree, Echo often saw Narcissus, and she admired him very much. 
One day Narcissus became separated from his friends, and hearing something
rustle among the leaves, he called out, "Who's here?" 
"Here," answered Echo. 
"Here I am. Come! "I am come," said Echo; and, as she spoke, she came out
from among the trees. 
When Narcissus saw a stranger, instead of one of his friends as he had
expected, he looked surprised and walked quickly away. 
After this, Echo never came out and allowed herself to be seen again, and in
time she faded away till she became only a voice.

The Myth of Hades and Persephone (an excerpt)

Hades fell in love with Persephone and decided to kidnap her. Demeter
went mad and hunted for her daughter everywhere. Persephone’s mother,
Demeter, begged her brother Hades to allow Persephone to come back to the
livings, denoting that the young Persephone was not supposed to live in the
underworld. Hades consulted with Zeus and they both decided to allow
Persephone to live on earth for six months each year, while the rest of the time
she would be on his side in the Underworld. Before leaving the underworld,
Persephone had been persuaded to eat four seeds of a pomegranate. In ancient
mythology, to eat the fruit of one’s captor meant that one would have to return
to that captor or country, so Persephone was doomed to return to the underworld
for four months of the year. But she was allowed to spend the remaining two-
thirds of the year with her Earth, Mother, Demeter.
The myth of Hades and Persephone is associated with the coming of
Spring and Winter: When Persephone comes to the Earth, it’s springtime. When
she descends to Hades, it is winter.
