TOTAL MARKS: 40 MARKS
Answer ALL questions.
Question 1
The above reaction is conducted at initial temperature of 250°C and partial pressure of O2 at 3.0 atm.
From prior study, it was determined that the reaction is first order with respect to C2H4 and zero order
with respect to O2. Given the value of rate constant at 100 °C is 0.2 dm3/mol.s with activation energy of
12.80 kJ/mol. Calculate the reaction rate for the above reaction if 60% of C2H4 was consumed during
the reaction. (Assume the air contains 79 mole% of N2 and the balance O2).
(13 marks)
Question 2
C2H6 → C2H4 + H2
is carried out isothermally in a constant volume of batch reactor. From prior study, it was determined
that the activation energy of the reaction is 25.0 kJ/mol with the frequency factor of 0.485 min-1. Given
the initial concentration of pure ethane (C2H6) is 5.0 M.
a) Determine the rate constant for the reaction if 80 % of ethylene (C2H4) gas was formed within 48.0
minutes of reaction time.
(7 marks)
b) Determine the reaction temperature in Kelvin (K) for the above reaction.

Question 3
2N2O → 2N2 + O2
was conducted at temperature 895 °C and total pressure of 1 atm with feed flow rate of 2.32 dm3/s.
From a prior study, it was determined that the value of rate constant is 0.98 dm3/mol.s at temperature
725 °C. Given the activation energy for decomposition reaction is 85 kJ/mol.
a) Calculate the size of Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) required to decompose 90% of
the nitrous oxide.
(11 marks)
b) Calculate the volume of the reactor if the reaction is carried out in Plug Flow Reactor (PFR).
(6 marks)
