SUMMARY

The Psychological Effects of Hybrid Identity for Mulatto in Nella Larsen’s

Quicksand; Septian Ratih Winanti; 080110191027; 2013; 54 pages; English
Department, Faculty of Letters, Jember University.

Mulatto is a hybrid person of miscegenation between binary opposition races,

white and black. This thesis examines Nella Larsen’s novel, Quicksand, through the
light of theorist of postcolonial scholar Homi K. Bhabha about hybridity. The main
character, Helga Crane as a mulatto, has no pure identity as a white or a black. She
takes impact of her hybrid identity. She lives in both whites and blacks to find a place
she feels home. She is rejected in white and black society as a part of them because
mulatto does not absolutely belongs to their society. It brings some effects on Helga
Crane’s psychology.
The study is firstly to find out the condition of hybridity suffered by Helga
Crane as a mulatto depicted in the novel. Second is to describe the psychological
effects of hybridity suffered by Helga Crane. Third is to know Helga Crane’s choices
to escape from the uncomfortable feeling as a hybrid. Generally, it is to know how a
mulatto faces the life as a hybrid.
Furthermore, this thesis uses library research and qualitative method is
applied to collect the data. The data are taken from several resources related to the
postcolonial issue especially about hybridity. Quicksand novel is the primary object
and Homi K. Bhabha’s The Location of Culture is the main source to the theory of
hybridity under postcolonial study. All data are categorized in forms of narrations and
statements. The steps of analysis begin from categorization of narrations and
dialogues about the suffering of Helga Crane as a mulatto from her surroundings, the
psychological sides suffered by Helga Crane and her decision to escape from an
uncomfortable feeling. Then, all the data are processed by using the theory of
hybridity within postcolonial perspective.

The result of this study shows that Helga Crane as a mulatto gets rejection
from white and black society even from her own family. The psyche of a mulatto as a
racial hybrid is colonized by otherness and unhomeliness feeling. A mulatto lives in
escapism by back and forth in white and black society in order to avoid the
ambivalence of physical and psychological experience. Quicksand is the voice of
Nella Larsen to convey to the readers about how a mulatto faces the life. Mulatto
lives like quicksand that belongs to everywhere and nowhere.
