SUMMARY
ix
x
The result of this study shows that Helga Crane as a mulatto gets rejection
from white and black society even from her own family. The psyche of a mulatto as a
racial hybrid is colonized by otherness and unhomeliness feeling. A mulatto lives in
escapism by back and forth in white and black society in order to avoid the
ambivalence of physical and psychological experience. Quicksand is the voice of
Nella Larsen to convey to the readers about how a mulatto faces the life. Mulatto
lives like quicksand that belongs to everywhere and nowhere.
