I. INTRODUCTION

Gulayan sa Paaralan is one of the best way on how we can improve

learning especially in barrio schools. This is because the school garden plays a
primordial role in the supplementary feeding programs which aims to decrease
the number of malnourished learners and ensure that only organic vegetables
and fruits are served. It has been concluded that malnourishment among
school-age children directly affects their academic performance and may
eventually lead to other problems like truancy, and the likes.
Aside from the implementation of the school gardening for the
purpose of the feeding program, gardening inculcates among our learners the
values of good health and nutrition, industry, love of labor and caring for
others. Furthermore, this will inspire our learners to improve their nutritional
status, be informed about the sources of their food and discover the benefits of
gardening. It also serves as a stimulating activity in which the learners
enhance their leadership skills. Gardening, after all, is one of numerous
livelihood skills that learners acquire in school which should be applied and
replicated in their respective households.
The school is a miniature society which means that it is a reflection of
the community and at times what is being showcased in the school is true to
the entire community. The Gulayan sa Paaralan affirms the thrust of the
national government for small scale food production that aims to sustain food
security, promote health awareness, and generate income for the community.

II. ACCOMPLISHMENT

Learners were able to plant various vegetables and root crops in the
designated garden area within the school premises. In addition, the school
joined the Gulayan sa Paaralan competition. The learners were also able to
harvest their own plants and sell them, hence contributing to the school’s
income generating project.

III. CONCLUSION

The Gulayan sa Paaralan shall be implemented in every school

regardless of area so as to improve and increase vegetable production by
teaching the learners the methods of sustainable food production which can be
applied to their homes. Moreover, learners should be encouraged to do
gardening so they will also be encouraged to eat healthy.

IV. RECOMMENDATION

The Gulayan sa Paaralan of Polo Integrated School has just been

relocated to its new area hence, it still lacks quite a number of facilities to
meet the requirements set by the Gulayan sa Paaralan committee, to wit:
1. Construction of perimeter fence along the garden area
2. Construction of vermicompost
3. Construction of plant nursery
4. Establishment of a seed bank
