The National Artist Award is the highest national recognition given to Filipinos who have made
significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts and letters. It was created through
Presidential Proclamation No. 1001 on April 27, 1972. Jointly administered by the National
Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the
award is conferred by the Philippine President upon recommendation by both institutions.
In 1992, the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) began selecting and honoring
recipients of the National Living Treasures Award, also known as Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan
(GAMABA), through Republic Act No. 7355. The lives and work of these Filipinos exhibit a dedication
to craftsmanship and excellence that are unparalleled.
Through their passion, abilities, and tenacity in passing down their heritage to the youth, many
cultural practices of indigenous communities were preserved.

POINTERS TO REMEMBER
More often than not, contemporary artists rely on planning every step of their way to achieve
desirable outputs. Concerned with the result of their efforts, they always try to connect their stories
and experiences to the viewers and observers in all possible means. They also explore great deals
from art supplies and distributors to satisfy their creativity. In the same way, there are those who are
willing to learn new art processes, techniques, practices, and styles just to establish their own self
identification in the world of art.
For an artist to give blow of his/her craft, he/she must know how to develop and select potential
approaches in ensuring technique appropriateness in his/her state of the art. This aspect is vital in the
course of creating systematic and concise plans in developing socially engaged but indigenous-friendly
art expressions.
Students like you will acquire deeper understanding and appreciation of many different
approaches that can be employed in any chosen art activity. Various approaches in researching for
techniques and performance practices such as cooperative learning approach, focused exploration,
discussion, free exploration, experimentation and media analysis.
