Name: ARMARY JOY T. BARJA

College: BU College of Nursing
Course: BS Nursing – 1D
School Year: 2022 – 2023 First Semester
Subject: Mathematics in the Modern World
Topic: Prelude to Problem Solving

The Problem

The Price you have to pay.

A limited-edition BU ID lanyard is on sale priced at Php97.00 only for today. Unfortunately, your
cash is just enough to get you through the day. Your two generous friends offered to lend you
Php50.00 bill each so all of you will have that limited edition lanyard.

Now, you have enough money to buy the lanyard. You then bought it and were given a change of
Php3.00.

As you still have Php3.00, you decided to return Php1.00 each to your friends, which leaves you
with a Php49.00 debt to each of them.

Since your remaining balance to each friend is Php49.00 and you have a remaining Php1.00 at
hand, that is:

Php 49.00+ Php 49.00=Php 98.00 (amount payable to your friends)

Php 98.00+ Php 1.00 $=Php 99.00 (add the $Php1.00$ is available at hand)

The total amount, as shown in the computation above is Php99.00. But you originally have
Php100.00, where is the other Php1.00?

Answer (15 points)

Write your answer here.

Solution:
2(50)=100
100 – 97=3
Amount payable to friends: 98+1=99

Putting as an example:

Friend 1 Friend 2
Before purchasing: 100 = 50 +¿ 50
Purchased the item: 97 +¿ 3 (change)

Distributed the 1 peso each to friends: 97 +¿ 1 (The remaining 1-peso money from the 3-peso
change)
100 = 97 +¿ 1 +¿ (1 +¿
1)

Before:
You have the hundred pesos on hand.
After:
97 (ID) +¿ 1 (change from 3 pesos) = 98 (money you have)
2 (money your friends have)

100

 Meaning to say, there is no missing 1-peso bill.
