Chapter I - (Lesson 3 & 4 - Activity)
• This activity has two parts that try to compare how we look at ourselves against how people perceive us
depending on how we present ourselves to them. For the first part, list 10 to 15 qualities or things that
you think define who you are around the human figure representing you.
• For the second part, in the space below, write “I am ___________ (your name). Who do you think I am
based on what you see me do or hear me say?” Pass your paper around for two to three minutes
without looking who writes on it. As you fill out the paper of your classmates, write briefly and only those
that you observe about the person. Do not use any bad words and do not write your name. After the
allotted period, pass all the paper to your teacher who will distribute them to the respective owners.

Analysis
Compare what you wrote about yourself to those written by your classmates. What aspects are similar and
what are not? What aspects are always true to you? What aspects are sometimes true or circumstantial? What
aspects do you think are not really part of your personality?
In this activity, I realized that I am not just who I am that I wrote about myself to those written by my classmates because I was amazed
when I saw the words that they defined me. I found some similarities as well as differences between how I perceived myself and how my
classmates defined me based on how I act or what I say. The similarities that they wrote about my personality is that I am a very hard
working, resilient, passionate, positive, and caring person. Those are the aspects that are always true about me. While the aspects that are
sometimes true to me or circumstantial are respectful, good listener, trustworthy, and I am also a kind hearted person. For me those
qualities of myself depend on my mood and to those people around me. Lastly, the aspect that I think is not really part of my personality is
Talented. I won't agree with this one because It’s out of my personality. It won’t define my personality as a talented person because I'm not
literally good when it comes to showing talents. I’m just being true about myself that's all. But, no matter how different our personality is, we
have always been respect each other’s and know our limitations.

Western Eastern

People are not as traditional & conservative than those in People are conservative and traditional
east
Do you agree with the differentiation between the West and the East? Where can you find the Philippines in
the distinction? What are the factors that make the Philippines similar or different from its Asian neighbors? Is
there also a difference between regions or ethnolinguistic groups in the Philippines?
I think the “Eastern and Western” culture differentiation is overly simplistic and does not reflect the complexity of human societies. Today,
there seems to be a whole cottage industry set up around the concept of “East vs. West” cultural differences. People make good money
consulting with companies on how to be culturally sensitive, how to adjust when faced with cultural conflicts, and even how to exploit the
cultural dimension to maximize business profit. The difference among individuals within one “culture” may well be more important that the
collective differences between two “cultures”. The problem with the “Eastern and Western” cultural differentiation is also that it introduces
many crazy stereotypes: “Eastern people are this, and Western people are that” - none of which is exactly true.
An honest opinion from me would be yes. I definitely agree with the Western and Eastern differentiations. The nations of the East and
West are distinctly very opposite to oneanother especially in culture-wise and society-wise. Although, even I haven’t visited a Western
country, I am quite familiar and have a view of the way they live through movies ortv series that I watch. Also, through streaming videos in
YouTube and in books. I could say that West is rational, and East is sentimental. The East’s culture is often based on the continuity of
their/our past, that we all are traditionbased. Culture differs from one country to another and from one region to another.
No culture can be the same. The Philippines is part of the world's eastern region. I can say from the comparison from above that the
Philippines, from our neighboring countries, have similar traits, culture, and traditions. Like, showing respect for elders and ties to one’s
family or barangay. In Thailand, they have the wai, in Japan and Korea they bow. In the Philippines, they have mano po. This gesture is
given as a sign of respect. It’s even practiced in Indonesia, where itis called salim. This is how neighbors influence each other. We are also
conservative and sentimental individuals.
We are all very family oriented. When it comes to our personalities,Asian countries share the same personality of being nice people, very
tolerant, easy going, and polite most often. We also smile more often than people in the West. If we have similarities, we also have
differences to our neighboring countries. While majority of Asian countries have their own alphabets like Korea, China, Vietnam , Japan
and more, Philippines on the other hand never had the chance to enrich our own alphabet, the Alibata, instead, we adopted the English
alphabets. Culturally, our society is most shaped by Westerninfluences.
We were Catholicized by the Spanish, who left their imprint in enough during their colonization to our country. The fact that the Spaniards
colonized us for 300 years and next were the Americans which these two are Western nation, we have adapted some of their cultures,
traditions and also our language. Yes, there is a difference between regions or ethnolinguistic groups. For example, the dialects spoken,
famous folklore, well-known local products, festivals, etc. The fact that when if we just move to another city, the dialect is now very
different.
