The presentation covered the components and operation of the A4CF2 transmission found in Hyundai and Kia vehicles.

The main components are the torque converter, clutches, brakes, gear ratios, solenoid valves and speed sensors.

The A4CF2 transmission has 6 solenoids - 5 PWM solenoids (PCSV-A through PCSV-D and VFS) and 1 VFS solenoid. They control line pressure, apply clutches and brakes for gear changes.

Todays Webinar A4CF2 Intro

Presented by: Jarad Warren

General Information
The A4CF2 transmission can be found in Hyundai; Elantra, Accent, Avente, and other Non US
models.

Also in the Kia; Spectra, Forte, Soul and other Non US models.

Solenoid valve 6 (PWM:5EA, VFS:1EA)
General Information
The new small sized automatic transaxle A4CF2 is for gasoline 2.0 engine. The transaxle has
improved on the durability, fuel consumption and efficiency by the new main features as
followed.

1. The hydraulic centrifugal oil pressure balance piston.

2. The full line pressure variable control system. (reduces fuel)
3. The long travel damper clutch. (in converter)
4. The disc type return spring. (reduced size)
5. The ultra flat torque converter. (reduced weight and size)

PCSV solenoid resistance 3.5 ɏ at 77°F operates at 50hz. Normal high solenoid.
VFS Solenoid resistance 3.5 ɏ at 77°F operates at 0-1200 mA
Solenoid Operation
PCSV-A: It controls the hydraulic pressure for OD clutch and LR brake. When the oil pressure is required for OD clutch or
Low & reverse brake, this solenoid valve must be off. Another solenoid valve (on/off) will decide the oil passage to OD or
LR.
PCSV-B: It controls the hydraulic pressure for 2nd brake or Reverse clutch. When the oil pressure is required for 2nd
brake or Reverse clutch, this solenoid valve must be off. Whenever this solenoid valve is off, it will make the oil passage
of reverse clutch opened. If the manual valve ‘R’ position is selected, the pressure will be applied to the reverse clutch.
That is the reason why the reverse clutch is not engaged in 2nd and 4th gear

PCSV-C: It controls the under drive clutch operation. When this solenoid valve is off, UD clutch will be engaged.

PCSV-D: It is only for Lock-up Clutch (damper clutch) operation. When this solenoid is off, the damper clutch is released
on and Torque Converter Clutch applies.

On/Off: When this solenoid valve is off, LR brake pressure is released and the OD clutch pressure is applied. That is the
reason why the 3rd gear failsafe (mechanically failed 3rd gear condition) is possible when the all solenoid valves are off
including this solenoid valve.

VFS Variable Force Solenoid: Controls transmission pressure.

Resetting Transmission Adapts
Adaptive Learning
The PCM and TCM contain logic to adjust the solenoid duty and line pressure to compensate for normal clutch wear over the life
of the transmission. Adaptive value reset and relearn must be preformed to provide optimum shift quality after completing the
following repairs.
Replace automatic transmission
Replace PCM or TCM
Reprogram PCM or TCM
Adaptive values must be reset using procedure 1 or 2 according to model and model year (MY) as shown below. The adaptive
values must also be relearned by following steps 2 and 3 after resetting

Kia Vehicles Requiring Automatic Transmission Adaptive Value Reset / Relearn

Procedure 1 Procedure 2

Model Disconnect Negative Battery Cable for 10 Seconds Use Hi Scan or GDS

Amanti 2004 2005 and later

Optima 2001-2004 2005 and later

Resetting Transmission Adapts
Use the Scan tool to reset the automatic transmission adaptive values found in the automatic trans-mission section menu. Follow
the steps shown in RESETTING AUTO T/A VALUES or INIT OF TCU LEARN-ING menu sections.
1.Hook the scan tool to vehicle and input VIN or auto select VIN
2.Select Automatic Transmission system
3.Select Vehicle S/W Management tab as shown
4.Select “Init Of TCU Learning”
5.Ignition key on
6.Engine off
7.Shift lever in P or N
8.Vehicle speed 0 MPH
9.Click the “OK” button.
10.Adaptive Reset is complete as shown
11,Turn the ignition key off for ten seconds
NOTE: The 2005 and later MY Sorento requires the accelerator pedal pushed down 50%. Carefully
follow the instructions on the screen.

Driving Relearn: Dynamic Automatic Transmission Adaptive Learning Procedure:

1.Attach your scan tool and monitor ATF temperature and TPS percent.
2.Bring ATF temperature to just over 120°F and drive from a stop shifting from 1st to 4th gears at 30% TPS (Approx.
3000 RPM shift). Repeat 3 - 5 times until any shock or flare is eliminated.

Static Shift Relearn:

1.Stop the vehicle and shift into N for three seconds. Shift from N to D for two seconds. Repeat 3 - 5 times until there
is no N to D shock.
2.Stop the vehicle and shift into N for three seconds. Shift from N to R for two seconds. Repeat 3 - 5 times until there
is no N to R shock.

Transmission Fluid / Service
Drive the vehicle until the fluid reaches normal operating temperature 70~80°C (158~176°F).

Move the gear selector lever through all gear positions. Set the selector lever to the "N" (Neutral)
position.

Before removing the oil level gauge, wipe all contaminants from around the oil level gauge. Then
take out the oil level gauge and check the condition of the fluid.

Check that the fluid level is in the "HOT" mark on the oil level gauge. If fluid level is low, add
automatic transaxle fluid until the level reaches the "HOT" mark.
