9. MATERIAL OF CONSTRUCTION
********************
Centralized firewater tank and Fire pump room equipment in the pump room.
NFPA standards and local guide lines together form the basis for the fire protection design of the Entire
building.
Fire protection system shall be designed and install as per NFPA standards, and UL/FM approved.
As per NFPA, the Entire building has been classified as Ordinary Hazard (NFPA13-ANX-A. p.g.no.15, Group
2) (Clause A.5.3.2), building height exceeding 15m in height.
NFPA 24 - 2010 Edition - Standard for the Installation of Private Service Mains
Following functional system shall be followed with the listed reference Standards:
Code Requirements:
Water supplies for Fire hydrant systems (Internal & External) are required to be capable of providing
the water pressure and flow characteristics required by the systems being served.
Buildings protected throughout by automatic sprinkler/rack sprinkler systems, are required by the
NFPA standards and M+H guide lines. Yard Hydrants at every 45m of periphery of the Building with
Single headed Hydrant valve, 2 x 15 mts / 1 x 30 mts long fire hoses and Branch pipe with Nozzle.
The Internal fire hydrant station consisting of landing valve and swinging type hose reel shall be
provided at every 1000sqm interval at landing near the staircase in side the dedicated Shaft.
Proposed Design:
Fire hydrant system (Internal Hydrants): System shall be hydraulically designed to provide water flow
at minimum residual pressure of 3.5 bar at outlet of most remote hydrant valve. Each hydrant station
shall comprise of single headed landing valve, swinging type hose reel and associated equipments.
Internal hydrant stations shall be provided for every 1000sqm floor area at each floor landing near the
staircase.
Orifice plate shall be used to restrict the pressure up to 4.5 bars for hose reels and 7 bars for internal
and external hydrant valves.
Internal Hose connection and hose station shall be unobstructed and shall be located near to the
staircase, opening to the common area.
The hydrant risers shall be terminated with air release valve at the highest points to release the trapped
air in the pipe network.
The External hydrants shall be provided around building near to the face of building with the
maximum spacing of 45 meters between two external hydrants.
The ring main shall be connected with exiting ring main(Ring-1) hydrant system through isolation
valve and supervisory switch;
Four way Fire Brigade inlet connections shall be provided at ground level (Suitable location) to fill the
ring mains of hydrant system in case of failure of pumps.
The purpose of automatic sprinkler protection is to control the growth and spread of fire to provide
increased protection to occupants and the building structure.
Code Requirements:
As per NBC - building as been classified, as Ware house buildings, Group–H. Above 15m in height. And the
sprinkler system shall be designed accordingly.
The water supply shall be capable of providing the system demand for 60 to 90 minutes.
Proposed Design:
The sprinkler system shall be hydraulically designed accordance with the above classification.
Minimum Pressure: Not less than 40.6 psi (2.8 bars) for remotest sprinkler.
The sprinklers in the building shall be fed from different risers, located in the landing of staircases. The
sprinkler piping network shall be provided with suitable size of butterfly valve with in-built supervisory
switch, flow switch and test and drain assembly.
The Sprinkler system shall be provided in all areas except the electrical room (Transformer room),
communication rooms, Fire control room, switch rooms, and toilets.
Installation control valve shall be provided for sprinkler riser, at suitable location, for alarming incase of
fire.
Ball valve of suitable size shall be provided for drain of sprinkler system at the farthest point and shall be
taken to nearest drain outlet by means of piping.
Four way Fire Brigade inlet connections shall be provided at ground level (Suitable location) to fill the
rising mains of sprinkler system in case of failure of pumps.
Proposed Design:
Independent electrical driven main fire pumps and jockey pumps shall be used for hydrant and electrical
driven main fire pump and jockey pump shall be used for sprinkler system. However the 2 Nos. of diesel
driven engine for both the system shall be common with necessary pressure reducing valve (If required)
to compensate the difference between operating pressure of both the systems.
The hydrant pump shall be 4550Lpm @ 125m head. The minimum pressure required at farthest and
remotest hydrant valve is 7 bars and pump head is calculated accordingly.
The sprinkler pump shall be of 4550 LPM @ 125m head. The head is calculated after considering flow
and pressure requirement of 40.6 PSI (2.8 bars) at the farthest and highest sprinkler point.
Note: 1) Proposed Hydrant system can be run by replacing the existing pump of 2850LPM to enhanced
capacity of hydrant pump capacity of 4500 LPM.
Separate jockey pump for both the systems shall be of 180Lpm @ 125m head.
Common Diesel engine driven pumps for both the systems shall be of 4550Lpm @ 125m head.
The jockey pump shut down shall be automatic whereas the main pumps and diesel engine for both the
system shall have manual shut down.
Fire Pump Test connection with flow measuring station shall be provided with piping to re-circulate the
pump’s discharge to water supply tank or to the pump’s suction.
Water flow from hydrant pump system shall be allowed towards the sprinkler system but under any
condition sprinkler pumps flow shall not be allowed towards hydrant system.
Total height of the building – 15.9 mts (from average ground level around the building to the last livable
floor)
A minimum of 7 kg/ cm2 (70 MWC) of pressure required to be provided at the farthest / last hydrant point.
Plus a minimum of 10% of Hydraulic pressure loss is considered in the entire system.
So the fire pumps are selected with a head of 125 MWC (12.5 kg/cm2) to deliver the necessary pressure.
When the sprinkler head, hose reel or hydrant valve opens, the pressure drop in respective piping
network which will be sensed by pressure switches installed in delivery header of pumping system. This, in
turn switches on the respective jockey pump automatically to meet the water requirement. In case of further
pressure drop, the system’s main pump will start to meet the water supply requirement. The jockey pumps
will start and shut off automatically as per pressure adjustment, whereas the main pumps of both the system
and common diesel engine driven pump will have auto start and manual OFF feature.
Proposed Design:
Portable fire extinguishers are provided at locations mentioned below,
HFC 236 Clean agent Fire Extinguishers Conforms to ISI standards, CE certified and ISO 9001certified.
Located in each staircase landing on every floor
ABC powder based MAP Fire Extinguishers Conforms to ISI standards, CE certified and ISO
9001certified. Located in each staircase landing on every floor.
Monnex powder Fire Extinguishers Conforms to ISI standards, CE certified and ISO 9001certified.
Located in each staircase landing on every floor.
