Cell Biology

Muscle fibers/Aseptate Fungi/Larger fungi

Challenge the idea that cells are;
Autonomous units/discreet/large organisms have multiple cells.
Signs of life mnemonic: MR SHENG
Unicellular organisms
Can be seen by Compound Light Microscope
Examples of unicellular orgasims
Paramecium (heterotroph: can’t manufacture own food)
-Breathes thru diffusion
-Excretes thru an anal pore and vacuole
-Engulfs food in membranous feeding groove
-moves bc it has cilia
Scenedesmus (Autotroph: Can manufacture own food)
-feeds by photosynthesis
-breathes by diffusion
-makes colonies to seek protection
Features of cells
Contain nucleus – controls and directs cell activities
Cytoplasm- site of all chemical reactions of life
Cell/Plasma membrane- Controls entry and exit of substances from the cytoplasm

Understanding Surface area to volume ratio

Mass/Vol is related to rate of metabolism

Surface area is related to rate of material exchange

If the metabolic rate of a cell increases faster than its rate of exchange of materials, then the cell will die.
This is why cells remain small in size and divide.
Increasing Surface area
This is to increase the rate of exchange of substances. Examples for exception include villi in the
intestine and microvilli in the alveoli.
