A. INTRODUCTION
In foreign language learning, specifically English, there are so many text types
that should be mastered not only by elementary level but also advance level learners.
One of the text types is description.
In Learning Activity, I will explain about descriptive texts . The texts, in this case,
describe the particular objects in relation to things and places. I will give the students
some examples of descriptive texts about things and places. The Students will analyze
the social function, characteristics, generic structure, grammar and language features.
The Students will able to related the material in their daily activity and environment
like knowing the place around theirs such as school, that place they can be describe to
get the learning. The place they can take medicine, like hospital or Puskesmas, the
market the place that can be buy or shop, or a tourism site. A tourism site or a well-
known historical building can be famous for domestic visitors or foreign visitors when
there is promotion of the objects through the description of the place or building as
interestingly as possible. Because after all, descriptive material is very necessary for
increasing of learners’ English proficiency such as in social communication.
This part of the module is designed to provide learning activities for all of
students in SMPN 3 Satu Atap Aek Natas to promote their comprehension skills in
spoken and written texts. The activities shall focus on the knowledge and skills required
to comprehend and express explicit and implicit meanings in the following descriptive
texts.
1 Short Description

In this learning activity we will study the description of things and places. It can be said
that any descriptive text is a meaningful text that describes and reveals particular thing
or place. The purpose of the text to give a visual picture of a thing, such as My Big
Dolphin Doll that describe specific Doll, or a picture of a tourism place, such as
Borobudur Temple by explaining its features, forms, types, location, or anything related
to what the writer describes. The purpose of the descriptive text is clear, that is to
describe, represent or reveal an object, either abstract or concrete.
2 Relevance

The objective of Learning Activity 2 is to assist the students in SMPN 3 Satu


Atap Aek Natas in understanding deeply the definition of genre text, that is descriptive
text, specifically in describing things and places. Explanation and examples of this
descriptive text can help me as English teachers who are still a long journey to learn
English. By analyzing the social function, as well as the language features that are
mostly used in this kind of text, the students will understand it more. And it would be
nice if the students donot only understand here, but also capable to write descriptive text
themselves. Especially to write the tourism site in Aek Natas. This module tries to meld
theory and practice with clear explanation.

3 Learning Guide

This module is organized as follows: in the first part (Introduction), we provide a


brief of description, objectives, and guide about this module. Inthe second part (Main
Section), it is essentially about learning outcomes, learning material, and learning
activities. It is designed with clear explanation about descriptive text such as its
definition, social function, and language features. The learning activities in this
module are designed tohelp students in understanding written and spoken form of
descriptive text. It also provides discussion forum as a media in which the students can
share their own ideas related to the topic given. In the third part, it is followed by
formative assessment to check the students comprehension about descriptive text related
to things and places. In the final section, reflective summary is provided where the
students can reflect the result of our learning process using this module.

2. MATERIAL DESCRIPTION
Defenition of Descriptive Text
Descriptive text is a text that describes characteristic of a person or things in a descriptive
manner
According to Kane (2000)
“Description is about sensory experience—how something looks, sounds, tastes. Mostly it
is about visual experience, but description also deals with other kinds of perception.”

According to Gerot and Wignell (1994), “Descriptive text is a kind of text with a purpose to
give information. The context of this kind of text is the description of particular thing, animal,
person, or others, for instance: people pet are well known”

Langan (2011: 189), the main purpose of a descriptive text is to make readers see or hear,
taste, smell, or feel what the author wrote. The details key to descriptive text is enabling
audiences to imagining and feeling what is being described

From the explanation above, it can be concluded that descriptive text is a text that describes a
particular person, place or thing. It tells how something looks, smells, tastes, feels and sound. In
this research, the writer only focuses on descriptive text because the writer wants to study about
introducing descriptive text to the students using English tourism brochures.

very intelligent marine mammals.

Text 2 Describing the Place

Borobudur Temple
Borobudur temple is one of the most beautiful tourist resorts in Indonesia. It is situated
in central Java. Borobudur temple is one of the seven wonders of the world which needs to be
preserved its circumstances. The people all over the world know that Borobudur is one of the
greatest art works that ever known since long time ago.
Borobudur temple was built by Syailendra Dynasty during the eighth century. It needed more t
han two million river stones. It is the biggest temple in the world
After going into some restorations, Borobudur is visited by more and more tourists, both
domestic and foreign tourists. Most of them admire Borobudur temple because of its beauty, its
elegance and the story of the relief on its walls.
Domestic tourists usually go there by bus or private cars, while foreign tourists like to
join travel bureau because they don’t need to think of the transportation, accommodation, and
itinerary. There are some money changers around the location. It makes them easier to change
their money. But some of them like to bring credit cards and checks.

FORMATIVE TEXT
Kediri is a name of a town. It is situated in a valley between the Kelud and Willis
mountains and inhabited by about 1.3 million people. In the centre of the town there is a large
hill which is called the Dathok Mountain. Because of the topography of the region, Kediri is
called a chilly town by the locals. There is a big river called Brantas cutting off the centre of the
town.
Beside the temples, Kediri is also famous for its products like cigarettes and a special
kind of tofu or bean curd. This highly nutritious food is delicacy of Kediri and has a distinctive
taste. The cigarettes factory dominates the town economy and employs the majority of the
women labor force. Kediri and the cigarettes factory are inseparable and it is considered the
biggest cigarette factory in Indonesia. Most of the local people work in this factory. Those who
do not work here are farmers or traders.

MY HOUSE

My House is divided into two floors. On downstairs, I have all the important parts of the
house such as the kitchen, bathrooms, storage room and parking garage. On upstairs I have one
room where I keep the washer and dryer and one big terrace.
Downstairs, the floor is divided in eight rooms, four of them are bedrooms, other two are
bathrooms and then one kitchen and one dining room.
In my bedroom, I have a lot of things inside, such as a television, a playstation 3, and
many tropies.
In my sister's bedroom, there is a computer and in the other two bedrooms are for my
parent and my other sister. Normally we eat in everywhere we want, but on Sunday we eat
together in the dining room. I really love my house, the place where we could share everything
together.
