What Keq

Can Tell Us
1. Whether a reaction is likely to be feasible.

◎ If Keq is very large, the reaction

essentially “goes to completion”
◎ If Keq is very small, most of the
reactants remain unchanged.
◎ When Keq is about equal to 1, roughly
equal amounts of reactants and
products are usually present at
equilibrium.
2. The direction of reaction

◎ Reaction quotient, Q, is used to determine if a

reaction is at equilibrium.
◎ Q expression is similar to Keq except that the
concentration measurements were obtained
not necessarily at equilibrium.
◎ To determine which way the reaction will
proceed to reach equilibrium depends on the
value of Q.

3
◎ If Q is less than Keq, the reaction will
use up the reactant to produce the
products.
◎ The direction is to the right.

4
◎ If Q is greater than Keq, to reach
equilibrium, the products must be
consumed to form the reactants.
◎ The direction is geared towards the
direction of the reactants.
◎ If Q is equal to Keq, the system is at
equilibrium

Sample Problem

◎ Given the equation:

N2 (g) + O2 (g) ↔2NO (g) Keq = 6.2x10-14
◎ If we start with 0.0650mol of N2,
0.0135mol of O2, and 0.0014mol of NO
in a 5.0L flask, which direction will be
favored?

Performance Task 3

◎ For the following reactions, write the equilibrium expressions [12 points]

3Fe (s) + 4H2O (g) ↔ Fe3O4 (s) + 4H2 (g)

◎ a. Is this a heterogeneous equilibrium or a homogeneous equilibrium?

2NOCl (g) ↔ 2NO (g) + Cl2 (g)

◎ a. Is this a heterogeneous equilibrium or a homogeneous equilibrium?

2CO2 (g) + H2O (l) ↔ 2O2 (g) + CH2CO (g)

◎ a. Is this a heterogeneous equilibrium or a homogeneous equilibrium?

9
Problem Solving:

◎ 1. A mixture of 9.22 moles of A, 10.11 moles of B and

27.83 moles of C is at equilibrium in a one-liter
container. A (g) + 2B (g) ↔ 3C (g)
A. Write the equilibrium expression, Keq, for the forward
reaction. [3]
B. Calculate the equilibrium constant for the reaction. [3]
C. Does the reaction favor the reactants or the products?
[2]
D. Is this a heterogeneous equilibrium or homogeneous
equilibrium? [2]

10
◎ 2. At 60.2oC the equilibrium constant, Keq,
for the reaction N2O4 (g) ↔ 2NO2 (g) is
8.75 x 10-2. At equilibrium a vessel contains
N2O4 at a concentration of 1.72 x 10-2M.
A. What is the concentration of NO2? [5]
B. Is this a heterogeneous equilibrium or a
homogeneous equilibrium? [2]
C. Does this reaction favor the reactants or
the products?[2]
