LIFE AND WORKS OF

RIZAL
Why were the Filipinos deprived of quality education?

There are so many factors affecting the issue on why where the Filipinos deprived of quality education. I

think that poverty remains as the top contributor with regards to the poor education here in the Philippines.

When I watched the film Rizal in Dapitan I realized that poverty is the main social issues presented in the

film. Because of poverty some Filipino can't afford quality education. In this film we can see that Poor

Filipinos are relying to the words of the priest. They trust them not knowing that they become ignorant

believing in every words of their Priest. Now, many children showed signs of eagerness within themselves

when it comes to being an educated person or professional in the near future. Unfortunately, they do not have

enough resources to do such as their parents main priority is to feed the entire family. Yes, education is free

but it does not obtain its own context of having a quality education available to every Filipinos because some

children chose to seek for a job rather than attending school. Somehow, it is concerning and sad. It is part of

the Filipino culture. No one is to blame but I believe that the youth or children are the only reason for it to

happen. It is only possible if they will be the one seeing the importance of gaining knowledge in school. It

depends on their point of view in life. It is their determination and courage that will put them at the top.

Filipinos are deprived of quality education because of their own mentality. Truly, we do have different point

of views in life and we are not assuming that every result is similar to another but if we open our minds to see

that it is ourselves who is the main factor that can choose whether we settle for less or we settle for what we

deserve. God always provides.

Was Spain totally remiss of its duty to give the Filipinos good education?

Yes, Spanish remiss its duty to give Filipinos good education that they deserved under the colonial era. During

the early years of Spanish colonization, education was mostly run by the Church. Spanish friars and missionaries

educated the natives and converted indigenous populations to the Catholic faith. Education during that period was

inadequate, suppressed, and controlled. Philippine education was only a means to remain in the Philippines as

colonizers. Filipinos became followers to the Spaniards even if these things happened here in the Philippines. Priest
are judging Filipino for being ignorant. Lack of opportunities for educated young Filipinos to rise in the service of

God and Country. Discrimination during the early times was very much utilized. This is because the schools before

were exclusive only for the Spaniards. Filipinos were only able to attend school in the late 19th century. Some

schools also limited their lodging to the sons of wealthy Filipino families. Friars hardly discriminated Filipinos

because even if they were able to enter school and study, the friars believed that Filipinos would not still be able to

match their skills and they will only learn fast if they would strictly implement disciplinary actions or the means of

applying corporal punishment. Spaniards contributed the spread of Christianity in our country and they taught us

about the religion but the fact cannot be denied that they do not open doors for the Filipinos to have a proper

education. They just look at our ancestors as uneducated or indio. They wanted to prevent Filipinos being educated

because it will be used as weapon against them.
