Answer the following questions. Make necessary assumptions if required.

1. For a certain incompressible flow field it is suggested that the velocity components are given by the equations
. Show that the flow is irrotational and the fluid flow satisfies the
conservation of mass. (6)

2. The stream function for a given two-dimensional flow field is . Determine the corresponding
velocity potential. (6)
3. The velocity potential for a certain inviscid, incompressible flow field is given by the equation

where has the units of m2/s when x and y are in meters. Determine the pressure at the
point x=2m, y=2m, if the pressure at x=1m and y=1m is 200 kPa. Elevation changes can be neglected, and the
fluid is water. (6)
1 (x=1,y=1) 2 (x=2,y=2)

4. A 1:60 model of a ship has a wave resistance of 0.36N when operating in water at 1.25 m/s. Find the
corresponding prototype wave resistance, and power requirement. (6)
5. An oil (sp.gr 0.9) is flowing through a 1.2m diameter pipe at a rate of 2.5 m3/s. The kinematic viscosity of oil is
3 X10-6 m2/s. In order to model this flow, water is used to flow through a 120mm diameter pipe having kinematic
viscosity of 0.012X10-4 m2/s. Find the model discharge and velocity. (6)

6. A fluid flows through a horizontal 0.1-in.-diameter pipe. When the Reynolds number is 1500, the head loss
over a 20-ft length of the pipe is 6.4 ft. Determine the fluid velocity. (6)

7. Oil (SG 0.9) with a kinematic viscosity of 0.007 ft2/s, flows in a 3-in.-diameter pipe at 0.01 ft3/s. Determine the
head loss per unit length of this pipe. (6)

8. Water flows through a horizontal plastic pipe with a diameter of 0.2 m at a velocity of 10 cm/s ( temp 20 deg
C) . Determine the pressure drop per meter of pipe using the Moody chart. (9)

9. The pressure rise Δp across a pump can be expressed as function of D, ρ, ω, Q where D is the impeller
diameter, ρ the fluid density, ω the rotational speed, and Q the flow rate. Determine a suitable set of
dimensionless parameters. (9)
