The Influence of Media on Eating Disorders Among Children and Adolescents

Eating disorders entail a range of several psychological conditions that lead to the

development of unhealthy eating habits. Such habits may include: Eating too fast, Skipping

meals, Overeating, Eating when not hungry, and not following a proper eating schedule. Healthy

eating is a key to good health and well-being and helps maintain a healthy weight. Eating

disorders may start as a food obsession leading to weight gain. If left untreated, eating disorders

may result in serious health problems such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and high

blood cholesterol. Anorexia nervosa is a type of eating disorder that develops during childhood

and adolescence where individuals avoid eating certain food types to avoid being overweight. In

bulimia nervosa, individuals consume a relatively huge amount of food and maybe overweight.

Researchers have strived to identify the causes of eating disorders. Factors such as genetics,

environment, and lifestyles have been linked to unhealthy eating habits. This paper will

determine how media influence eating disorders among children and adolescents.

Journal Article #1

Uchôa et al. (2019) investigate the role of TV shows and the media in promoting eating

disorders among children and adolescents. Media promotes a sense of physical beauty by using

slim and well-shaped vixens in their shows. Adolescents who watch such shows feel dissatisfied

with their bodies as they cannot match these expectations. Internalization of this body image

often leads to eating disorders. Uchôa et al. (2019) found that media had a huge effect on body

image among oversized adolescent students and had a high likelihood of developing eating

disorders. Adolescents will try to lose weight to look like their favorite TV idols. The most used

method is avoiding eating with results in eating disorders. How media represents preferred body

images affects society.

Journal Article #1

Salas-Humara et al. (2015) investigate media's influence by gender and sexual orientation

among adolescents with eating disorders. The study finds out that both gender and sexual

orientation influence body image perceptions among teenagers. Various sexual orientations

experience the impact of media on body image differently. For example, sexual minorities

reported less media influence than heterosexual youths. This study suggests that there is a need

to explore the gender differences in eating disorders.

Females face more pressure than men and desire to have attractive body shapes. As a

result, women are reported to suffer more from Anorexia Nervosa as compared to men. Media

has a role in creating body image stereotypes of what is beautiful and desirable. This article is

relevant to the research question as it provides new insights into how eating disorders affect

different genders. This study represents how media influences adolescents to engage in

unhealthy eating habits to look perfect.
