INTRODUCTION
This document contains two different tutorials describing the basic aspects of
the simulation:
• Characteristics of the hydraulic circuits
• Creation of a Pumping project
More tutorials are in preparation and will be added in the future. They will
explain in more detail the different features of PVsyst. The complete reference
manual for PVsyst is the online help, which is accessible from the program
through the “Help” entries in the menus, by pressing the F1 key or by clicking
on the help icons within the windows and dialogs.

What is a pumping test? The basic concept of the pumping test is very simple: water is extracted (by
pumping or drawing) from a well or borehole, thereby lowering the water level.
The water level in the extraction well and the pumping rate are observed over a period of time, as are
various other parameters, where possible.
The way the water level reacts to pumping is then analyzed to obtain information on the performance
characteristics of the borehole and the hydraulic properties of the aquifer.
There are many types of tests to choose from intermittent or continuous, short, or long duration, low or
high pumping rate, etc.
Which other parameters or characteristics of water should be observed, in addition to those that are
obvious, that is, the water level and pumping rate in the well being assessed?
The main difficulty encountered when studying groundwater (in relation to flow measurements in a
river, for example) is that one works blind, because it is impossible to see the aquifer and directly
observe its behavior.
Aquifer: A layer of rock sand, or earth that contains water or allows water to pass through it
Information about the borehole and the aquifer can only be deduced by looking at how the water level
reacts to pumping. Why do a pumping test?
• Evaluate the reliable long-term performance (or production output) of a borehole, and
therefore determine whether the borehole can be considered a "success", and how many
people it will be able to supply.
• Deduce the hydraulic properties of the aquifer. Pumping tests are the standard method (and
may be the only one) to determine the hydraulic properties of the aquifer, such as transmissivity
and storage coefficient, or to reveal the presence of hydraulic limits.
• Test the operation of the pumping and observation equipment to be sure that everything is
working safely and efficiently and, if necessary, confirm that the contractors have done their job
properly.
• Assess the effects of this extraction on neighboring extractions (sometimes called interference).
• Provide information on water quality. Is the water quality sufficient for the intended use? Is it
stable in the long term?
• Should we expect problems such as taking saline or polluted water after long periods of
pumping?
• Define optimal operating regimes (especially for multi-well pumping), choose the most suitable
pumping station for long-term use, and assess the probable pumping and / or treatment costs.
• Help determine the exact depth at which the permanent pump should be installed in the
borehole.
There are many types of tests from which to choose the most suitable:
• Tiered test: designed to determine the short-term relationship between the yield and the
drawdown of the borehole tested. It consists of pumping in the borehole, with a series of
bearings at different flow rates, the flow rate usually increasing at each level. Last level should
approach the estimated maximum yield for drilling
• Constant flow test: performed by pumping at a constant flow rate much longer than in the step
test, it is primarily designed to provide information on the hydraulic characteristics of the
aquifer. It is only possible to infer information relating to the storage coefficient of the aquifer if
the data come from appropriate observation boreholes.
• Ascent test: consists of observing the rise in water levels after the pumping stops at the end of a
constant flow test (and sometimes after a step test). It is useful for checking the characteristics
of the aquifer deduced from other tests but is only valid if a non-return valve (foot valve) is
placed on the discharge column, otherwise the water is forced back into the borehole. These
tests can be carried out individually or in combination. In general, a full suite of tests begins with
a step test, the results of which help determine the pumping rate of the constant rate test and
ends with the ascent test. The test concept can be adapted for use in boreholes of various sizes
(small, medium, or large), the main differences being the pumping rate, the duration of the test
and the complexity of the observation system.
HT = HG + HS + HD + HF
where:
HG = Head due to the height of the outlet pipe above the ground (assuming that outlet pressure is
negligible).
HS = Static head due to the depth of the water level in the well, in absence of any pumping.
HD = Dynamic "drawdown" head: in a borehole well, the effective water level is dynamically lowered by
the water flow extraction (see below).
For this system, in the "Pumping Hydraulic definitions" dialog, you will be asked to specify:
- The static depth. This may also be given in seasonal or monthly values, in the «Water Needs" next
dialog.
- The maximum pumping depth, corresponding to the inlet aspiration level. The system will stop the
pump when the dynamic level reaches this level, avoiding dry running.
- The specific drawdown expressed in [m / m3/h]: this is a characteristic of the borehole and the
surrounding ground.
The pump may be placed near the source (no more than 4-5 m above the water surface, less at high
altitudes, for avoiding cavitation problems).
The pump is not necessarily of "Submersible" type, therefore much cheaper. On the other hand, its
maintenance is easier.
Remember that the Pressure or Head is mainly related to the difference between the input and output
levels. The pump must provide a total head resulting of several contributions.
HT = HG + HS + HF
where:
HG = Head due to the height of the outlet pipe above the ground (assuming that outlet pressure is
negligible).
HS = Static head due to the depth of the water level, with respect to the ground.
For this system, in the "Pumping Hydraulic definitions" dialog, you will be asked to specify:
The lake or river level depth, with respect to the ground. This may be also be given in seasonal or
monthly values, in the «Water Needs" next dialog.
The "Pumping Systems" in PVsyst only concern "isolated" pumping systems, which work according to the
sun's availability, without electrical storage. Such a system consists of one (or several) pump, a PV array
and a controller/power conditioning unit (very exceptionally a booster battery).
The implementation of such systems involves a detailed definition of the hydraulic circuit (kind of system
like deep well, pumping from a lake or equivalent, or pressurization system) and water needs, the Head
(as function of the flowrate and possible other parameters), the water needs, and a tank storage. Some
other constraints may be taken into account (maximum drawdown in a deep well, tank full, etc).
The running mode according to the sun's availability implies that the pump will operate at a power
imposed by the maximum power of the PV array at a given time. As the head is imposed by external
conditions (level difference, head loss in the pipes, drawdown in a deep well, etc.), the resulting flow rate
will be directly related to the instantaneous power availability.
Therefore, the simulation needs a complete model of the pump behavior, giving the resulting flowrate in
any conditions of power and head. The Operating point, depending on the Total Head variations according
to the flowrate (pipes head losses, drawdown level) will be evaluated by successive approximations.
The main advantage of isolated Pumping systems is the absence of a battery, and the associated
maintenance costs (replacement, etc). The storage is indeed performed by the accumulation of water in
the tank. However, this requires a pump able to operate in a wide range of powers.
The conventional pumping systems fed by a grid electrical system (or eventually a big stand-alone system
like a village mini grid) will operate at the specified voltage of the grid. The operating power will be fixed,
it is supposed to be available at any time. The system will operate in "ON/OFF" mode, according to the
water needs and control system. An intelligent strategy of energy management may favor the pumping
during the daylight hours, when the sun is available.
Such systems are not implemented explicitly in PVsyst. The pumping system should be considered as a
load in the same way as any other load.
Therefore, a pumping system as defined in PVsyst cannot be associated to any other PV system, even a
stand-alone system. It should really stay independent of any other power system.

Third step:
Page "Water needs and head definitions"
Define the water needs in m3/day (may be yearly, seasonal or in monthly values).
Define the pumping static depth if varying along the year (may be seasonal or monthly). The value
defined here corresponds to the value "Level depth" or "Static depth" specified on the previous page.
The pre-sizing suggestions on the top of the dialog pre-evaluates some parameters (tank volume, pump
and PV array power) required for meeting your pre-defined water needs requirements. See also
"Pumping sizing" for the principle. You can play with the parameters for getting orders of magnitude.
However, this pre-evaluation is difficult and may be inaccurate, as performances are very different from
one to another pump.
Fifth step:
In the "System" dialog, page "Pump definition".
Choose a pump model, taking the nominal Head into account (pumps are coloured in green for suitable,
orange for not optimal, or red for not suited devices).
You have a summary of the pump capabilities, as well as of the set of pumps if you choose several ones.
This dialog also provides a little too for the calculation of the Hydraulic Power corresponding to a given
Head x FlowRate product.
Sixth step:
In the "System" dialog, page "Sub Array design".
Again, the Green/Orange/Red colours indicate the suitable choices, according to the previously chosen
System type, Pump model and Pumps number. A collection of specific Warning messages explains the
reasons of incompatibilities or poor design.
The chosen Regulation strategy fixes the available set of control devices.
Eighth step:
You can open the Controller Device and check its parameters
All system running specificities are defined in the Controller/Regulation device. This includes namely the
boundary operating conditions (Tank full, dry running, Power, Voltage, Current limits, etc.)
Nineth step:
PV array design, number of modules in series/parallel.
For MPPT converter devices, the procedure is analogous to the design of grid connected systems: you
can specify a planned power and PVsyst will propose a configuration (use the button "Resize" for a
complete resizing). You have to choose a number of modules in series for which the Voc(Tmin) doesn't
exceed the VmaxAbs of the converter, and the Vmpp(TOper) should not be under the VmppMin of the
converter.
The number of strings is to adjust according the power requirement of the pump in operating
conditions. This is not always easy to obtain, due to constraints on the MPPT inputs of the real
controllers.
Tenth step:
If no error appear in red, you are ready for the first simulation of your system.
After having defined the site and the meteorological input of the project, you can proceed to create the
first Variant. You will notice, that in the beginning there are 2 buttons marked in red: “Orientation” and
“Water needs”. The red color means that this variant of the project is not yet ready for simulation:
additional input is required. Basic parameters that need to be defined for any of the variants, and not
yet specified are the orientation of solar panels, Water needs, type and number of PV modules, type and
number of pumps that will be used.
This is a tool aiming at showing the best suited orientation for a PV system, or what you lose when not
optimally oriented.
The Transposition Factor is the ratio of the incident irradiation on the plane, to the horizontal
irradiation. I.e. what you gain (or lose) when tilting the collector plane.
Now please observe that the optimization of the orientation depends on the planned use for the PV
energy.
Therefore, this tool gives the possibility of choosing the optimizing period: Year, Winter, Summer, or
chosen months.
Moreover, the optimization may depend on specific far-shading conditions (mountains): you can define
a horizon line, and this will usually result in an azimuth displacement.
When choosing the (fixed) plane orientation, an information panel indicates the corresponding
Transposition Factor, the difference (loss) with respect to the optimum orientation, and the available
irradiation on this tilted plane.
Clicking "Show optimization" button, you can see a graph of the Transposition Factor as a function of
the plane tilt and azimuth. These graphs also indicate your actual choice by a violet dot on the curves,
showing at once where you are positioned with respect to the optimum
To complete your Water needs, you must in any case click on the “Water needs” tab.
Here is the list of elements that you must fill in to continue the simulation
• Well Characteristics :
o Static Level
o Drawdown or Max Flowrate
One of the two values will suffice, the other value will be automatically calculated by the software
according to the following formula : Drawdown = (Lower Dynamic Level – Static Level ) / Max. Flowrate
o Lower dynamic level (will be calculated by software, if you modify the value, this will
modify the value of Drawdown or Max Flowrate. The value of the lower dynamic level
must always be greater than the value of the static level.
o Pump Level
o Borehole Diameter (not used in calculation or simulation)
• Hydraulic circuit
o Pipe choice
o Piping length
o Number of elbows (can stay at “0” for the simulation)
o Other friction losses (can stay at “0” for the simulation
Now, you need to define the water needs. To do this click on the tab “Water needs and Head
definitions”.
The water needs (volume of pumped water) may be specified yearly (constant value), or in monthly /
seasonal values.
Specifying needs in terms of hourly values (daily distribution) does not make sense, as most of the time
the pumping system includes a storage for at least one day of consumption.
NB: The pre-sizing part cannot take these variations into account and will be established using the yearly
average.
You do not need to change the value of “well static depth variations”, this value is the same as the static
level in tab “Pumping Hydraulic Circuit”.
4- Definition of system
You have the choice between several pump manufacturers, which gives you the choice between:
• Surface pump
• Immersed pump
• AC pump
• DC pump
• Etc….
You can modify the autonomy and accepted missing values according to the needs of your simulation.
The modification of these values will automatically recalculate the three values suggested by the
software.
To choose the most suitable pump for the characteristics of your system, the software will make a Pre-
Selection. This selection is made according to the following characteristics:
The pumps in red are not compatible with your needs, the pumps in orange are compatible but do not
fully meet your needs, the pumps in green are compatible and optimum.
Either on the electric side or on the hydraulic side, you are advised to connect all the pumps in parallel.
At the moment PVsyst accepts electrical connections in series only for centrifugal pumps with DC motor.
Other configurations do not make sense. The reasons are:
On the electric side, connecting two positive displacement pumps in series will prevent good starting
conditions; after one pump has started, overcoming its peak starting current, the current will suddenly
drop to the operating value; therefore the total current will be limited so that the second pump may
never reach its own thresholds current.
On the hydraulic side, it is probably not a good practice to connect two pumps in cascade for obtaining a
higher head in the same flow, as non-linearities in the pump behaviour, or electric feeding differences,
may lead to very unbalanced heads. This is especially true for positive displacement pumps.
It is far better to choose a pump model which undertakes the nominal foreseen head.
This tool allows you to simulate the characteristics of a borehole (not necessarily related to your project)
With this tool, you can define a maximum surface or power that you want to install.
When a value is defined in one of the two boxes, the software will make a wiring suggestion via the PV
Array Design tool.
- Direct coupling: between the PV array and the pump(s), without power converter unit. This is of
course only possible with DC motor pump(s). Although often used owing to its simplicity, this
layout requires a very careful electrical optimization, and cannot yield a good efficiency in any
operating conditions.
- Booster device, electronic device for overcoming high starting current due to friction losses
- Cascading when using several pumps
- Array reconfiguration, not common but rather simple technique involving simple controlling
device with relays
- Battery buffered systems, where a battery is used to regulate the pump running in time. The PV
Battery behaves like a standard standalone system, and the pump is always running in optimal
conditions at the nominal battery voltage.
You can have a look at the simulation Results to compare the performances of these operating
strategies.
Controller
By the way, even the simplest configurations (direct coupling) require the presence of a control device,
which should at least assume the following functions:
- Manual Power ON/OFF
- Pump OFF when tank is full
- Pump OFF when aspiration level is below the pump inlet (preventing dry running),
- Eventually motor temperature protection,
- Protection against powers, currents or voltages which overcome the maxima specified for the pump
(s).
The sizing constraints are very dependent on the system layout.
On the Project's dashboard, all buttons are now green (eventually orange) or Off.
This dialog shows on the top a small summary of the simulation parameters that you should quickly
check to make sure that you made no obvious mistake in the input parameters.
Below is a frame with nine values that summarize at one glance the main results of the simulation.
They only give a very coarse picture of the results and are there to quickly spot obvious mistakes or to
get a first impression of a change or a comparison between variants of the project.
