INTRODUCTION
A panel discussion, involves a group of people, gathered to discuss a topic in front of an
audience. Panels usually include a moderator who guide the discussion and some elicits audience
questions, with the goal of being informative and entertaining.

DEFNITION OF PANEL DISCUSSION


"Panel discussion is a discussion in which a few people carry on a conversation in front of the
audience."

"The panel discussion method is a discussion in which 4 - 8 persons who are qualified to talk
about the topic, sit and discuss a given problem or the topic, in front of large group or audience,"

CONCEPT OF PANEL DISCUSSION


Panel discussions at conferences are a useful way to trigger an exchange of viewpoints among
experts, either with prepared statements or in response to questions from the audience. Because
they involve on-the-spot interaction, they are more difficult to prepare for than presentations.
Because they may involve divergence of viewpoints and possibly competition for speaking time,
they are also more difficult to manage than the normal questions at the end of a presentation. For
the same reasons, they are more challenging to moderate than a regular conference session.
Panels are teams. Whether or not panelists agree on all issues, they can and should work together
to create an interesting discussion for the audience. The role of a panelist, play the part —
prepare well and participate well. The role of the moderator, direct own team well, from the
beginning of the session to the end.

PRINCIPLE OF RESPONSESIBILITIES OF THE TEACHER


 Identify ,or help participants identify, issues or topics upon which to base a panel discussion.
 Ensure that all panelists and the moderator are familiar with the procedures for panel
discussion in advance of the discussion itself so that they will be able to fulfill the
responsibilities of their roles.
 Assist panelists and participants (when necessary) in preparation for the discussion by
directing them to various source materials, authorities in the field ,etc.
 Help participants understand the need for fair procedures in discussing an issue or topic.

PURPOSE OF PANEL DISCUSSION


 It stimulates thought and discussion and clarifies thinking.
 It influences the facts, opinions and plans
 It influences the audience to an open minded attitude and respect.
 It can be helpful to stimulate discussion and developing group opinions.

CHARACTERISTRCS OF PANEL DISCUSSION


 To organise teaching at reflective level.
 Develops the ability for problem solving.
 Helps to understand the nature, problem and theme for discussion.
 Develops ability of presentation of theme.
 Helps in creative thinking.
 Develops right attitude.
TYPES OF PANEL DISCUSSION

1. Public Panel discussion


 It is used for common man.
 It is used to provide factual information regarding current problem.
 It determines social values of current issues.
 Ex - Unemployment in Covid-19 pandemic. Issues of social distancing, Annual Budget.
2. Educational panel discussion
 It is used in educational institutions.
 It is used to provide conceptual knowledge and clarification of certain problems.
 Example - Enhancing students learning skill with educational technology, Environment
education etc.
HOW IS A PANEL DISCUSSION CONDUCTED?
1. The moderator introduces the theme of the discussion to the participants. The moderator also
initiates the discussion on the issue under consideration.
2. The questions are then addressed to the panelists in a pre-determined order.
3. The panelists are called (in a pre-determined order) to express their views
4. Later, panel members may react to, respond to or complement the views expressed by
5. co-panelists.
6. At the end of the session, the moderator integrates and synthesizes the different points of
view and presents them to the audience.
7. If there is time, the moderator can call for further questions
8. Finally, the moderator sums up the discussion and highlights the key points.

ADVANTAGES OF PANEL DISCUSSION


 Encourages social learning.
 Higher cognitive and affective objectives are achieved.
 Used to develop ability of problem solving and logical thinking.
 Develops capacity to respect others ideas and feelings and ability to tolerate.
 It provides opportunities to assimilation of theme and content discussion.
 Helps understand the nature, problem or theme of discussion.
 Develops the ability of presentation of theme and giving logical explanations.
DISADVANTAGES OF PANEL DISCUSSION
 One member of the group can dominate the discussion.
 There is possibility to split the group in two subgroups.
 There are chance to deviate from the theme of discussion.
 If panelists belong to different groups, it may not create appropriate learning situation.
