At the end of this module, you will be able to:
1. Compare one’s perception of himself/ herself and how others see him/her.
2. Conduct a mini- survey on Filipino relationships (family, schools, and
community)

Directions: Write True if the statement is correct and False if the statement
is wrong.
1. Our self-esteem develop thru the help of our parents’ beliefs and
values that they teach to us in making our own decision.
2. Self-confidence and Competence are the components that define
self-respects.
3. Your outlook in life can be influenced by your past experiences.
4. Our parents, friends and the people around us are factors that can
influence our self-esteem.
5. Childhood events like poor performance in school have a lasting
impact on your self-concept.
6. Low self-esteem can include eating disorders or overeating, as well
as excessive drinking or smoking.
7. Self-worth is based on self-anger, disrespect, and self-blame.
8. Low self-esteem tends to believe that someone or something outside
themselves controls their behavior.
9. Effective self-talk is “you can finish your report today; get started
and stay focused”.
10. Low self-esteem in their childhood can be full of colorful experience
like excitement and happiness.
11. High self-esteem means you are not familiar with your abilities,
talent or skills.
12. Building self-esteem is taking responsibility for your decisions and
accepting the effects of certain action.
13. Imagination and dreams must be followed by action to help you
achieve your goals.
14. Positive self-talk must be realistic and consistent with one’s true self
to be effective.
15. Goal setting is not an important skill to achieve your personal goals.

HOW DO YOU SEE YOURSELF?


Every person needs to understand his/her self to be able to adjust in
the society that they belong. For some people if they know or understand
themself more in terms of being familiar with their abilities, skills, strengths
and weaknees they may develop self-confidence. Believing in ourself is very
important ingredients of success.

In some people it’s important to them to become aware on how they see
themself in front of others, and what other see on them. In that way they can
develop or chance to improve the aspects of their weekness so that they
develop self-esteem that boots up more the confidence of one person.

While other person it’s important to them to know what other think,
perceive them. Occasionally the way of perceiving themselves in positive or
negative perceptions of others or the way others think of them can have a big
impact to their self percetions. It can be help in positive manners like become
more confidence or in other way around it can be low self-esteem. According
to some individuals it’s always affects the way we think and perceive ourself
depends on the way of thinking of a persons.

SELF- PERCEPTION AND SELF CONCEPT PATTERN

The perceptions and attitudes people have about themselves, their


abilities, and their self-worth make up what is often called self-identify. People
form their self-identities from their values, life experiences, and interactions
with others. People with good self-worth and high self-esteem share certain
characteristics. They have strong personal values and believe that they can
control their lives. They have had positive life experiences and have received
positive ffedback from others. People with poor selfworth and low self-esteem
tend to have week personal values and think that they have little control over
their lives. They had primarily negative life experiences and have negative
feedback from others.

SELF-PERCEPTION- Different beliefs we have about ourselves, exert a


powerful influence on the kinds of activities we engange in.

SELF CONCEPT- According to Brown (1998), self-concept is the way a person
thinks about himself or herself.
Ø Is one’s mental image of oneself
Ø Is general term used to refer to how someone thinks about, evaluates,
or perceives themselve.

THERE ARE FOUR DIMENSIONS OF SELF-CONCEPTS

1. Self-knowledge – One’s own sensations, thoughts, beliefs, and other


mental states.
2. Self- expectation- A firm belief that something will happen or be the
case in the future.
3. Social self- Those aspects of one’s identity or self-concept that are
important to or influenced by interpersonal relationship and the
reactions of other people.
4. Social evaluation- as a mental process during which an individual
assigns diferent values, behavioral patterns, social interaction.

COMPONENTS OF SELF

1. IDENTITY- awareness of being distict & separate from others


2. BODY IMAGE- mental picture of one’s body
3. ROLE IN PERFORMANCE- is the way people perceive their competency
in carrying out significant role.
4. SELF ESTEEM- confidence in one’s own worth or abilities, self –respect.

FAMILY-SCHOOL- COMMUNITY PATNERSHIPS

They say that family or parents is our first teachers, they teach us on
how we act and what are the things we need to learned to improve our life.
And as we grow older family or parents in not only the sources of our
knowledge and understanding but the school also play important part of our
growth as human being. The family/parents and school give us more
information we need to adjust and to develop as better person that can serve
other individuals and the community that we belong.

Community is another institution that will help us to understand,


adjust, and gain more knowledge thru socialization. The combination and
partnership of family, school and community help us to become more
productive, and can serves the common good, while in the future we can share
our learning to the next generations.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF –CONCEPT


We need to become aware of the importance of our self-concept, because
it influences us on how we think, perceive, feel and act in our everyday life. A
person with self-concept helps us understand more about his personality and
the people around him. Having a self-concept can easily adjust to other people
and be able to understand oneself and others in the manner of percieving
good side even in a difficult situation.

Three parts of self-concept (Carl Rogers)

• Self-esteem- influences by inside and outside factors, on how much


you value yourself.

• Self-image- The idea one has the ability, appearance and personality
that sees in our self.

• Ideal-self- An interest in self-improvement and changes the flows of


your own by comparing yourself towards other in a correct manner.
