INTRODUCTION
 Paneldiscussion was originated by
Harry. A. Ober Street. It is a
technique used for higher learning.
In this method the participants
have equal chance of taking part in
the discussion. After the lecture or
seminar the participants are ask to
add if they like to add anything or
ask there doubt if they have.
 It is a type of method of teaching in
which discussion technique of learning is
based on the Modern theory of
organization.
 The assumption of this theory is that

every member of the organization has the


capacity to initiate and solve the problem
and brings certain attitudes and values to
the organization.
DEFINITION
 “Panel discussion is a discussion in which a
few people carry on a conversation in front
of the audience”

 A panel discussion is a method of teaching

in which 4 to 8 person or students discuss


the assigned topic/problem/issues creatively
among themselves in front of an audience.
 It
is defined as a discussion in which few
persons carry on conversation in front of
the audience.

 It
is defined as the discussion of a subject
of public interest by a group of persons
forming a panel in front of an audience.
OBJECTIVES:
 To provide information and new
facts.
 To analyse the current problem.
 To identify the values.
 To provide the full understanding of

significant topic.
 To give an awareness of theories and

principles.
 To organize for mental recreation.
PURPOSES:
 To produce the features for the benefit of
a large group.
 It is a socialized group conversation in

which different points of view are


presented.
 Panel discussion stimulates thought and

discussion and clarifies doubts.


 The quick exchange of facts, opinions
and plan tends to develop more critical
attitude and better judgement.
 It can be helpful to stimulate discussion

encouraging thinking and developing


group opinion.
 The panel influences the audience to an

open minded attitude and respect for the


opinion of others.
PRINCIPLES
 It observes the democratic principle of
human behavior.
 It encourages the active participation

independently.
 Equal opportunities are provided to every

participant.
 To respect the ideas of others or each

other.
 It involves the social and psychological
principles of group work.
 It organizes teaching at reflective level

that must be thoughtful.


 It should be employ independent thinking

of the participants.
PUBLIC PANEL DISCUSSION:
This type of discussion is organized for
common men problems.
Objectives:
 To provide factual information
regarding current problems.
 To determine the social values.
 To recreate the common men.
 The public panel
discussion are
organized in the
television program.
The current
problems, annual
budget, educated
unemployment,
increase in price of
things.
Objectives:
 To provide factual information and
conceptual knowledge.
 To give awareness of theories and

principles.
 To provide solution of certain problems.
PROCEDURE :
INSTRUCTOR:
 It is the responsibility of

instructor how, where and


when panel discussion will
be organized.
 The schedule of panel
discussion is prepared by
him, sometimes he has to
plan rehearsal also.
MODERATOR:
 In the discussion
moderator has to keep the
discussion on theme and
encourages the interaction
among the members.
 He has to summarize and

highlight the discussion.


 The moderator must have

the mastery on the theme.


PANELISTS:
 There are 4 to 10

panelists in the
discussion.
 The members of the

panelist in semi circle


before the audience.
 The moderator sits in the

middle of the audience.


 The panelist must have

the mastery on the theme


of the discussion.
AUDIENCE:
 After the panel
discussion, audience are
allowed to participate
and seek clarification.
 They can present their

points of view and their


experiences regarding
the theme or problem.
 The panelist attempt to

answer the questions of


the audience.
CHARACTERISTICS
 It is used in college and university level
to organize teaching at reflective level.
 It develops the ability of problem solving.
 It provide the opportunity to understand

nature problem theme and giving their


point of view logically.
 It develops right type of attitude and
ability to tolerate anti ideas of others.
 It develops the ability of creative thinking

and to criticize the theme.


 It develops the manners of putting

questions and answering questions.


ORGANIZING EFFECTIVE PANEL
DISCUSSION
 There should be rehearsal before actual
panel discussion.
 Identify participants to identify an issue

or topic.
 The chairperson should be a neutral

referee and begin the panel discussion by


exploring the whole proceedings.
 The members of the panel are first
introduced by name and background
experience.
 The topic is announced and the limit of

discussion should be stated.


 Select panelist who are well informed

and have specific points of view


regarding the chosen topic.
 Decide on the format of the panel
discussion.
 Select a leader or chairperson/ moderator

for the panel discussion.


 Moderator should have high hand on

theme which can control the situation.


 The moderator must keep the discussion

to the subject and ensure that all members


of the panel get an equal opportunity to
express their views.
 Need of proper arrangement.
 Moderator should encourage both

panelist and audience, so it can run


properly and effectively.
 The moderator summarized the main

points presented by the speakers and


invites the audience to contribute and ask
questions.
 Finally the moderator sums up the panel

discussion.

ADVANTAGES
 Encourages social learning.
 Higher cognitive and affective objectives

are achieved.
 Used to develop ability of problem

solving and logical thinking.


 Develops capacity to respect others ideas

and feelings and ability to tolerate.


 It develops right type of attitude and

ability to tolerate anti ideas of others.


DISADVANTAGES
 One member of the group can dominate the
discussion.
 There is the possibility to split the group in

two subgroups.
 There are chances to deviate from the theme of

discussion.
 If panelists belong to different groups, it may

not create appropriate learning situation.


 Time consuming
LIMITATIONS
 There are chances to deviate from theme at
time of discussion, hence the purpose of the
panel discussion is not achieved.
 Some members dominate the discussion and

do not provide the opportunities to participate


other in the discussion.
 There is possibility to split. The group into two

subgroups that is for and against the theme.
