This module is intended for Grade 5 learners. This is written to respond the needs of
the time. The activities of this module will help you discover the rules and concepts of the
lesson

This module comprises of three lessons that cover the following areas namely;
Lesson 1, Giving the Place Value and the Value of a Digit of a Given Decimal
Number,
Lesson 2, Reading and Writing Decimal Numbers through Ten Thousandths,
Lesson 3, Rounding decimal numbers to the nearest hundredths and
thousandths.
After seriously but with enjoyment doing the activities of this module,

number, read and write decimal numbers and round decimal numbers to the
nearest hundredths and thousandths.

In this module, you are expected to read, write and give the place value and value of
a decimal and round off decimal numbers.
What’s New
Now, let us study on the place value and value of a decimal number through
ten thousandths.
Let us use a place value chart to identify the place value a digit of a given
decimal through ten thousandths.
5 in 0.5432 means 5 x or or 0.5, it’s in the tenths place and its value is five
tenths.

What Is It
The value of the tenths is one-tenth the value of the ones place. The place to the left
is ten times the place to its right. The decimal point dictates where the whole number
part ends and where the decimal part begins.
To further understand the concept, let us study more examples. Write the place
value and value of the underlined digit. Number 1 is done for you.

What Is It
Like whole numbers, we read decimals from left to right. The digits to the left
of the decimal point are read as a whole number, and the decimal point is read as
“and”. The digits to the right of the point are also read as a whole number, after which
we say the name of the place value of the digit.

1.9876 – Nine and nine thousand eight hundred seventy-six ten thousandths
Observe the following decimal numbers on how they are written in standard form. Let’s
use again the chart below.
If you notice, numbers are written from left to write starting from the whole numbers, in
thirty and one ten thousandths, you write one in the ten thousandths place, since it is ten
thousandths. And you write zero in the preceding places.

What Is It
To round a decimal number, determine first the rounding place. Then look at the
digit to the right of the rounding place. The digit in the rounding place is the one that will
either be rounded up or rounded down depending on the digit to its right. If it is 5 or
greater, add 1 to the rounding place. If it is less than 5, retain the digit in the rounding place.
Do not forget to drop all the digits after the rounding place.
