MAT 120
MIDTERM ASSIGNMENT
SPRING 2021
SET: 14

Solve 5 out of 7 problems

Please write your Name, ID and Section on the first page of the
assignment answer script. The submission is due by 3 pm on
"31/03/2021".

You can only submit a PDF file - image or doc files won’t be accepted.
Before submitting the PDF, please rename the PDF file in the format -
SET_ID_SECTION.

Answer the questions by yourself. Plagiarism will lead to an F grade in

the course. Total marks is "150".It will be converted to 15 and There is
no bonus marks for LATEX submission.

Note that you must evaluate any gamma/beta functions for integer or half-
integer arguments. If the arguments are neither integers nor half-integers sim-
ply express your answers in terms of gamma functions.

1. Evaluate the following integrals by using Gamma function(Do not use any
table of Gaussian integrals) (k > 0):

(a) Z ∞
2
y 6 e−ky dy
−∞

(b) Z ∞

y 2 e−y dy
−∞

Hint: Think about odd and even functions and for part (b)
Complete the square

2. The following question is about Reduction Formula

(a) The reduction formula of a certain integral is

1 n−1
In = cos (4x) sin (4x) + 4(n − 1)In−2
4n
1
I1 = sin (4x)
4
What is I7 ?
(b) The reduction formula of a certain integral is
q
2x (x + 1)3
n
2n
In = − In−1
2n + 3 2n + 3
2 3
I0 = (1 + x) 2
3
What is I3 ?

3. (a) You all have learnt the concept of finding arc lengths of curves that are
bounded over some interval. The formula for finding the aforementioned
arc length of a curve, are as follows

s 2 2
Z b
dx dy
Arc Length = + dt.
a dt dt

Given the curve

4
x(t) = 3t2 y(t) = t3 − 3 ≤ t ≤ 3
3
Find out what the arc length is for the function bounded by the interval
[-3,3] (Take care with your square root)
(b) You all have learnt the concept of finding the surface area of revolutions
of a function that are bounded over some limits. The formula for finding
the aforementioned surface area of revolutions of a function are, as follows

Z b p
Surface Area = 2π |f (x)| 1 + [f 0 (x)]2 dx

Where f 0 (x) denotes the first derivative of f (x). Given that,

f (x) = 3x3 ,

find out what the area of the surface of revolution is for the function,
about the x axis, bounded by the x-interval [-3,3].

4. Solve the following Infinite Integrals. Comment on whether they are Conver-
gent or Divergent. If the integral is convergent, evaluate the integral.
Use the following technique:
R∞
An integral of the form −∞ f (x) dx can be written as
Z ∞ Z a Z ∞
f (x) dx = f (x) dx + f (x) dx, (a is a finite constant)
−∞ −∞ a
R∞ Ra R∞
and the integral −∞ f (x) dx converges if −∞ f (x) dx and a f (x) dx con-
verges.
(Use limits and avoid words such as undefined; take care to state your di-
vergence properly depending on the context; ∞, −∞ and ∞ − ∞ are all
different.)
Z ∞

(a) 2
dx
−∞ 1 + 5x
Z ∞

(b) dx
−∞ 9 − x

(2x − 3)(x2 + x + 2)
(b)
