1. What are the three informal groups of Protista? Describe their general characteristics
and give two examples from each group. (9 Marks)
Economic importance
1. Algae as food. Fresh water and marine algae are rich in proteins, carbohydrates, oils,
vitamin A,B,C and E and minerals and they have been utilized as a direct source of food.
For example, Laminaria species is the important edible seaweed.
2. Algae in medicine. For example, many algae such as chlorella, Polysiphonia, Laminaria
synthesis antibiotic substances.
3. Algae as fertilizer. For example, blue green algae that is also known as cynobacteria are
often used as biofertilizer to ensure oil fertility and plant growth.
