3. Briefly describe how amoeba obtain their foods? (2 marks)


- Amoeba taken their foods by process that is called endocytosis where they will engulf their
food from the environment with the help of their pseudopodia and later will form a vacuole
around their food. They also using their mouth like projection or absorbing nutrients from
their food.

4. What are the differences between cilia and flagella? (3 marks)


1. Cilia are short, hair-like structures meanwhile flagella are long, whip-like structures.
2. Cilia are only found in eukaryotic cells meanwhile flagella are found in both prokaryotic and
eukaryotic cells.
3. Cilia occur throughout the cell meanwhile flagella occur at one end of a cell.
5. By using specific example, discuss the economic importance of algae. (3

Economic importance
1. Algae as food. Fresh water and marine algae are rich in proteins, carbohydrates, oils,
vitamin A,B,C and E and minerals and they have been utilized as a direct source of food.
For example, Laminaria species is the important edible seaweed.
2. Algae in medicine. For example, many algae such as chlorella, Polysiphonia, Laminaria
synthesis antibiotic substances.
3. Algae as fertilizer. For example, blue green algae that is also known as cynobacteria are
often used as biofertilizer to ensure oil fertility and plant growth.
