RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 Study Design

The study was descriptive cross sectional research. According to Mugenda (2003) descriptive

research is a process of collecting data in order to test hypothesis or answer questions concerning

the current status of the subjects in the study. It incorporated qualitative and quantitative

approaches of data collection.

3.2 Study Area

The study was conducted in Nambale sub county hospital, BusiaCounty. Nambalehospital is

public hospital operating under the Ministry of Health .The average client flow per day is

approximately 200 -500 clients on daily basis in all departments.Nambale Hospital offers both

in-patient and out-patient services. On the in-patient side the hospital has a capacity of over 100

beds and 24 cots with an average occupancy of 200 patients, daily admission rate of 30 patients.

The in-patient department constitutes 3 medical wards, 2 surgical wards, 1 pediatric ward, 1

obstetrics and gynecology ward, 1 maternity ward and 1 amenity wards hence a total of 8 wards.

The out-patient department handles an average workload of 5,000 patients per month who are

served in the various departments within the hospital as outpatient patients. This includes the

patients with general ailments and those who come for specialized consultancy. The out-patient

departments include Diabetic Comprehensive Clinic (DCC), Comprehensive Care Centre (CCC),

Maternal and Child Health Care (MCH), Prevention of Mother To Child Transmission

(PMTCT), Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre, Casualty section, X ray department and laboratory

department.

The county has a population of 412,000 and an annual population growth of 2.51%. The annual

fertility rate of the county is 5.1% and the population is projected to be 688,778 by 2017. The
age distribution is estimated at 0-14 (45%), 15-64 (49%) and 65 and above (6%), with the youth

representing 25% of the total population.

Agriculture is the main driver of the economy in this county with over 70% of the residents

being small scale farmers. Small percentages are business people and civil servants working in

government institutions.

3.3 Target Population

The study targeted all women of reproductive age (15-45 years) attending family planning in

Nambale sub county hospital

3.4 Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria

3.4.1 Inclusion Criteria

 All the women of reproductive age (18-45 years) attending family planning clinic in

nambale sub county Hospital consenting to participate in the study.

3.4.2 Exclusion Criteria

 Women of reproductive age less than 18 years.

 Women of reproductive age with a known history of primary and secondary infertility.

 Women of reproductive age who have/had undergone gynecological operations leading

to permanent sterility

3.5 Sampling Procedure

Simple random sampling was used to select respondents because it gave each and every

respondent a chance to be selected hence there was no bias.

3.6 Sample Size Determination

Sample size was determined using the formula of Cochran formulae, 1977.
Sample size= n

1+ n

population

In which n =Z2× (P) × (1-P)

d2

Where: n= desired sample size

N=total population

q =1-P where P will be the expected proportion of accessible population.

Z=z-score (normal distribution curve, corresponding with two standard deviations at

95% confidence interval) =1.96

P= Expected proportion of accessible population with characteristics under study=50%

D= the degree of accuracy or tolerable error which is 10%=0.1

n=1.962X0.5 (1-0.5)

0.1

n=3.8416X0.25

0.01

n= 96.04

Sample size= n
1 + n

population

96.04/1+ (96.04/3600)

=93.54

The total number of 94 women participated in the study.
