ADDITION OF INTEGERS

SAME/LIKE SIGNS DIFFERENT/UNLIKE SIGNS

Add and take the sign. Subtract and take the sign of largest absolute value.

Example: Example:
1. Positive Signs 1. (-5) + 9 = 4 [9 is larger value than 5, so copy the sign of 9 then
3 + 7 = 10 subtract the numbers.]

2. Negative Signs 2. (-13) + 8 = -5 [13 is larger value than 8, so copy the sign of 13
(-3) + (-4) = -7 then subtract the numbers.]

copy the sign

(negative sign)

SUBTRACTION
Steps on How to Subtract Integers
1. First, keep the first number (known as the minuend).
2. Second, change the operation from subtraction to ADDITION.
3. Third, get the opposite sign of the second number (known as the subtrahend)
4. Finally, proceed with the regular ADDITION OF INTEGERS.

Example 1: Example 3:

2 – 4 –2 – 4
keep change change the keep change change the
to ADDITION SIGN to ADDITION SIGN

2 + (–4) = –2 –2 + (–4) = –6
Example 2: Example 4:

–2 – (–4) 2 – (–4)
keep change change the keep change change the
to ADDITION SIGN to ADDITION SIGN

–2 + (4) = 2 2 + (4) = 6
MULTIPLICATION/DIVISION OF INTEGERS

SAME/LIKE SIGNS DIFFERENT/UNLIKE SIGNS

Multiplication/Division of the SAME or LIKE is Multiplication/Division of the DIFFERENT

ALWAYS POSITIVE NUMBER. or UNLIKE is ALWAYS NEGATIVE NUMBER.

Example: Example:
1. Multiplication 1. Multiplication
(3)(4) = 12 (–3)( –4) = 12 (–3)(4) = –12 (3)( –4) = –12

Positive number Negative number

2. Division 2. Division
a. (12) (4) = 3 b. (–12) (–4) = 3 a. (–12) (4) = –3 b. (12) (–4) = –3
c. (16)/(4) = 4 d. (–16)/(–4) = 4 c. (16)/( –4) = –4 d. (–16)/(4) = –4

25 ( – 25) 25 (– 25)
e. =5 f. = e. = –5 f. = –5
5 ( – 5) (– 5) 5
