MultiMedia Tools: Video

Lesson Idea Name: Sampling and Surveying Analysis Report

Content Area: Statistical Reasoning
Grade Level(s): 12th Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
MSR.CD.1 Students will distinguish between a population distribution, a sample data distribution, and a
sampling distribution.
b. Students will create sample data distributions and a sampling distribution
ii. Create a sampling distribution of a statistic by taking repeated samples from a population (either hands-on
or by simulation with technology).

Technology Standard Addressed:

Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the
platforms, tools, styles, formats, and digital media appropriate to their goals

Selected Technology Tool: Adobe Spark, iMovie, Flipgrid, Windows Movie Maker, or other multimedia
authoring tool

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☒ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Student engagement is supported in this lesson through the means in
which students are able to produce their final presentations. Students are also selecting their own data set or
collecting data based on a topic of their choosing. This allows them to select a topic of interest to them in
place of one being assigned by the teacher. In replacing a traditional presentation with the option to produce
a video or screencast, more students will have the comfort of sharing their research results with a larger
audience.

Lesson idea implementation: Students have created a survey on Google Forms (or similar tool) and collected
data through sharing the survey on social media platforms (Done in previous unit). The collected data will
now be uploaded into Microsoft Excel to allow students to analyze by creating histograms, pie charts, and bar
graphs using Microsoft Excel or R Programming. Both tools were introduced while discussing qualitative and
quantitative data in the previous unit, but the teacher is actively assisting students with sample coding and
analysis. Once the analysis is complete, students will use this evidence to respond to their hypotheses created

with the survey.

Students will use two days of class to create a poster, PowerPoint, or other presentation to show evidence of
whether they accept or reject their hypotheses. The final data will then be shared by the students by creating
a video or screencast of their defense using Adobe Spark, iMovie, Flipgrid, Windows Movie Maker, or other
multimedia authoring tool. This will be done in class (Day 3). These research presentations will then be shared
with the other statistics classes (Day 4). Students will critique each presentation based on content. These
critiques will be shared with the receiving student to use when preparing their semester project that contains
similar aspects.

Importance of technology: The multimedia authoring tool used by students is a way to represent their data
and provide an analysis after the collection of data process. Students will use the finished product from the
authoring tool to present results to all statistics classes and teachers. Students will also use Google Forms or a
similar tool to produce a survey to collect data. Microsoft Excel or R Programming will also be utilized to
represent data through charts and graphs.

Inspiration (optional):

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Students will access only approved video tools and will use their school
email login. This will help minimize most risk involved with internet safety and student privacy. School laptops
will be used during class time. This will add another layer of protection as these are monitored using
LanSchool software. All district policies are followed when selected online tools for student projects.

Reflective Practice: Technology tools are always being tested and added to this project. Anything that can
enhance an aspect of the student’s presentation is investigated and utilized if it is applicable and aligns with
district policy on internet/technology usage. The continual addition of new technology assures student
engagement throughout the project. Students are always finding creative ways to build on previous class
assignments and the variability in technology allows them to make their own decisions in every step of the
project.
