A. Readings/ Discussions:
Have you ever wondered how the things around us work? With a little help from
machines, almost all tasks you can think of are done with much ease and convenience in less
time. Simple machines are simple tools used to make work easier for us. Look around—can
you identify these simple machines? You’ll be surprised to find out how simple machines are
commonly used in our everyday tasks or work.
There are six simple machines, namely: inclined plane, lever, wheel and axle, pulley,
wedge, and screw.

4. Pulley
The pulley is a simple machine that uses a rope, belt or chain wrapped around a wheel. It
changes the direction of the force. It is used to pull objects. A pulley has three points of
interest: fulcrum, effort at one end of the rope, and resistance or load.
There three kinds of pulley:
1. Fixed pulley – does not travel with the load. A load is
attached to one end of the cord that passes through the
pulley while the effort or force is applied on the other end
of the cord. The load moves up when a downward force is
applied on the other end of the cord. Example: pulley used
in the flagpole

2. Movable pulley – moves along the rope together with the

load. It is used to multiply the applied force. The pulley is
attached to the object you are moving. It does not change
the direction of the applied force.
3. Compound Pulley – is a combination of two or more fixed and movable pulleys.
Compound pulleys are used in ships and billboards.

5. Screw
A screw is a spiral inclined plane. It is composed of a cylindrical body with a spiral ridge
called thread. The threads surround the cylinder (shaft) from the tip to the head. The distance
between the threads is called pitch. It is used to hold things together like pieces of woods to
support parts of the furniture or pieces of metals that make up a machine.

6. Wedge
A wedge is an inclined plane or two inclined planes that meet each other to form a
sharp edge. Some wedges are rolled up to have a sharp point instead of an edge. Are usually
good for cutting and piercing. Examples of wedges are knives, axes, pins, and nails.

B. Exercises
Exercise I:
Directions: Below are examples of simple machines with illustrations and some key words.
Group or classify them according to the category of simple machine they belong to. Write your
answers on the table on the next page . Number 1 is done for you.

1. bottom end of a light bulb

2. threads
3. fixed, used during flag raising.

4. knife

5. pair of scissors
6. chisel
7. old fashioned-well
8. jar lid

Exercise II:
Directions: Look around your house. List all the simple machines that you can see. Classify
them as pulley, wedge, and screw. Give the uses and characteristics. Copy the table below in
your notebook for your answers.

For the Teacher: Advise the students to read the reading and discussion portion before
they
attempt to answer the practice exercises. Going through the parts sequentially will help easily
understand the topic.

For the Learner: Read through the self- learning home task from the first part to the last part.
Doing so, will help you understand better the topic.

For the Parent/Home Tutor: Assist your child and make sure that he/she reads the self-
learning home task from beginning to end to ensure proper understanding of the concepts.
