Ex; Both Adam and Jack are going to the party
EX; Hitler conquered both France and Holland

2- Between ………..and
3- Either ……………..or
EX; Either Liza or Susan is going to see to the task

Imp; The verb agrees with the nearest


part ;that is ,it agrees with the second subject .
EX; We will spend the holiday in either France or Italy .
4- Neither ………..nor

IMP; Do not use a negative form with Neither as it


is already a negative form .
EX; I did not see neither Sally nor her sister .

If a sentence starts with NEITHER ,both parts of


the sentence are inverted ;that is, the verb is placed before
the subject .
EX; I did not study .I did not enjoy my time .
EX; Neither did I study nor did I enjoy my time .
5- Not only………….but also
EX; He not only passed the exam but also got a high score

IMP; If the sentence starts with Not only the


sentence is inverted and the subject pronoun is placed
between BUT and ALSO .
EX; Not only did he pass but he also got a high score .
IMP ; The verb agrees with the second subject .
EX; Not only my friends but also Adam was absent .
6- As …………………..As
She is as beautiful as her mother .
He is as old as I am .
7- Not so ……………..as
This is the negative form of AS……..AS
EX; He is not so lazy as he used to be .

8- Not so much………………as
EX; She is loved not so much for her beauty as for her kindness

9- The more………………The more


10- The more ……………………..The less
11 - The adjective+ er …………………..The adjective + er
EX; The more you work the more you gain
The more you practice the less efforts you exert
The sooner you finish the reports the better you feel.
12 – It was not until…………………………that ….( NOT WHEN)
It was not until she apologized that her father forgave her .
It was not until 1939 that the world realized the danger of

If the sentence starts with SO or SUCH ,the verb is


inverted ;that is, the verb precedes the subject .
