The key takeaways are that daily attendance and participation is important for success in this math class. Students are expected to come prepared with their materials and complete homework daily to reinforce concepts outside of class. The teacher provides opportunities for extra help before school and by appointment.

Homework is assigned daily and is expected to be completed and turned in for a grade. Students must show their work and use pencil. Late work may receive half credit if turned in within one day. The homework grade makes up part of the daily grade.

Students are expected to take notes, pay attention, only work on math in class, and ask questions to contribute to discussion. An effort grade will be given based on preparation, cooperation, and engagement in learning. A 'Well Above Average' effort requires going above expectations.

Course Description and Goals

Math is an important mode of transportation to excel in all aspects of your education. We will build
and reinforce mathematical concepts that are absolutely necessary for future success. In addition to our topics
of study, the course will help develop the student’s intellectual capacity for higher level thinking as well as
develop the student’s mathematical confidence, perseverance, recognition of patterns, recognition of subtleties,
and communication of mathematical ideas. I will use our class time efficiently to maximize your learning
experience. If you work with me, communicate with me, and come to class ready to work, we can learn a lot
and have fun doing it.

Daily Materials
Every day you should bring to class your composition book, paper, textbook, workbook, pencil, and
your planner. You may find it useful to keep all your tests and quizzes in a binder as your final exam will
come from these. Do not use spiral notebooks for homework, since your homework will be checked in
class and/or collected each day. All of this material should be brought to class every day unless instructed
otherwise. Students will not be permitted to go to their lockers once class has started. Be prepared!

Attendance
Math is a very intense class and daily attendance is absolutely necessary for success. Students have one
day to make up work for each day of absence, not counting the day of return. This will give you ample time to
do quality make-up work. If the work is not completed in the appropriate length of time, no credit will be given
for the work. Students are expected to be in class on time. After the second unexcused tardy, you will receive a
white slip. I dismiss class, not the bell. If the student is in school for any portion of the day but misses this
class, it is the student’s responsibility to turn in the required homework and get the following day’s assignment
before leaving school.

Extra Help
I am available for extra help Monday mornings before school at 7:30. I coach three sports during the
year so if you want extra help in the afternoon, you will need to schedule an appointment with me. Come ready
with questions and problems you want me to review with you. This is not private tutoring, so there may be
other students there at the same time. You may need only five or ten minutes of help, and you don’t know until
you make the effort. Don’t wait until the last minute before a test to get help. Come prepared!
Homework and Notes
1. Students are encouraged to take notes during class lectures and keep a list of formulas,
equations, and example problems to assist them with homework assignments. Notes will be
checked randomly
2. The reason for homework is to practice what you have learned. Homework is assigned daily.
A chart will be posted with the week’s homework so a student can write down the homework
in advance if the student knows he or she will be absent. You can also find the homework
posted on the St. Edward’s website at w ww.steds.org. These homework assignments are
subject to change without notice and classroom instructions always takes precedence over
previous postings. Your success in this class depends greatly on the time you spend
doing your homework.
3. The homework is checked daily and is counted as a 10-point daily grade. To earn the 10
points, the student must have attempted all the problems showing all work, have all the daily
materials and the homework must be done on your tablet or on loose leaf notebook paper.
You will not be given credit for homework done on the pages of the textbook.
4. All work that is handed to me for a grade must be done in pencil.
5. Homework is to be done at home, not during the class presentation. When homework
problems are reviewed in class, it is the student’s responsibility to correct their work.
6. Homework is checked at the beginning of class for completeness and sometimes will be
collected after reviewing the solutions and answering all questions. Each homework
assignment is returned the following day with the points earned at the top of the page. Work
not corrected or questions left blank will not earn the full 10 points. Ask questions in class!
7. It is strongly advised that students keep all their homework and quizzes in a one inch binder
that is brought to class daily. If any discrepancies occur about homework assignments, the
student will have the assignments in question and will be given credit if credit is due.
Notebooks will be checked randomly throughout the year.
8. Half credit will be given to assignments turned in no later than one day late.
9. Daily deductions will occur if the student does not have their daily materials.

Quizzes and Tests

Tests and most quizzes are announced in advance and are closed book and closed notes. A pop quiz
(less than 50 points) may be given when it is needed. On most tests/quizzes calculators are not permitted. On
the other hand, some test/quizzes are calculator based. If you know that you will be absent for a test or quiz,
you need to make arrangements with me to take it early, or the very next day of class. If you will be in school
during any part of the day but you are going to miss my class because of a school-related activity, you must
make arrangements with me to take the test or quiz. All tests and quizzes will be returned to you in a
reasonable amount of time. Quizzes will not be handed back to the class until all students have taken the quiz.
If you are absent for a test, you can take the test early or the very next day you return. Because concepts
in math build on each other, every test or exam will be cumulative.

Grading
Every test will have a value of approximately 100 points and quizzes will be worth approximately 50
points. Homework will count for 0-10 points per assignment depending on its completeness.
Effort
1 – Well Above Average
The student is consistently cooperative, engaged in learning about Algebra, and striving for
excellence. If you wish to have a 1 in effort, you should make the effort to:
1. Miss no more than one homework assignment.
2. Be cooperative at all times.
3. Be on time each day with your daily supplies.
4. Pay attention in class.
5. Write down the problems, examples, and notes put on the board in class.
6. Only work on Algebra in class.
7. Participate in class with questions and/or comments that contribute to the productivity of
class.
8. Do more than what was assigned.

2 - Good
An effort grade of 2 is a good effort grade and shows that the minimum expectations for the class
have been met.

3 – Needs Improvement
An effort grade of 3 will be given for the following reasons:
1. Missing homework assignments.
2. Excessive tardiness.
3. Uncooperativeness and/or consistently retarding the productivity of the class by being
inattentive, talking at inappropriate times, making inappropriate comments, distracting others
from learning, and/or being consistently unprepared.
