CONTENT ANALYSIS
SYSTEMATIC:
Content to be analysed is selected according to explicit and
consistently applied rules
OBJECTIVE:
Researcher’s personal idiosyncrasies and biases should be avoided
QUANTITATIVE (QUALITATIVE)
Accurate representation of a body of messages – precision
USES OF CONTENT ANALYSIS
Assessing the image of particular groups in society
Lucas’ group studying representation of cancer patients in the media
Framing of LGBT in local news
Describing communication content
Comparing media content to the real world (e.g. violence on tv
as done by Gerbner 1969; agenda setting studies etc)
Establishing a starting point for studies in the media effects
Testing hypothesis of message characteristics
LIMITATIONS OF CONTENT ANALYSIS
Content analysis alone cannot serve as sole basis for claims
about media effects
Answers the question what?, and fails to answer why?
Findings of a particular content analysis are limited to the
framework of the categories and definitions used in that
analysis. E.g. Uhuru Kenyatta as president of son of Kenyatta?
Lack of content or messages related to the research
E.g., the representation of LGBT community
STEPS IN CONTENT ANALYSIS
Formulate the research question or hypothesis
How were presidential candidates represented in the local media
during the 2017 general elections in Kenya?
Define the universe in question
Daily Nation, The Standard, The Star, and The People Daily
Select an appropriate sample from the population
Use sampling techniques discussed to identify the sample
STEPS IN CONTENT ANALYSIS
Select and define a unit of analysis
A single word, symbol, a theme, or an entire article or story
Construct the categories of the content to be analysed
Emergent coding and a priori coding
Train coders and conduct a pilot study
Analyse the data
Draw conclusions and search for indications
