ANSWER SCRIPT FOR PATTERN MAKING FIFTH SEMESTER

Q1

1. Velour: is a cut pile fashion fabric used in men’s and women’s wear and in robes.
Velour is knit with loops that are cut evenly. Then the yarn uncurls, giving better
coverage. The fabric is dyed, tentered and steamed.
2. Intarsia: is a type of filling-knit fabric in which yarns that appear on the surface of
the fabric are discontinuous. Intarsia is a knit counterpart to a true tapestry weave.
3. Pile jersey: are made of modified circular jersey machine. Fabrics are pliable and
stretchy. The pile surface consists of cut or uncut loops of yarns.
4. Skewing: describes an off-grain problem. filling yarn interlace with warp yarns at an
angle less than or greater than 90 degree.
5. Bird’s eye: is a dobby fabric with an all over small diamond shaped filling float
design with a small dot in the centre of each diamond.
6. Fleece: is a type of weft insertion knit fabric. The technical back is napped. Used in
sports wear, cardigans, dresses and tops.
7. Terry knit: is a loop pile fabric constructed on a knitted base. It is softer and more
absorbent than woven terrycloth but does not hold its shape well.
8. Lace: is an openwork fabric with yarns that are twisted around each other to form
complex patterns or figures. Lace is handmade or machine made by a variety of
fabrication methods, including weaving, knitting, crocheting and knotting.
9. Tuck stitch: is a type of knit stitch in which the previous stitch is
not cleared from the needle. It creates a pucker in the fabric and is
used in creating patterns.
10. Tubular knit: is the fabric produced from the circular knitting
machines. They are slightly skewed.
11. Jersey: is a fabric of lightweight to heavyweight. It is knit on a circular jersey
machine and sold in tubular form or cut and sold as flat goods.

3. Modern Knitting Industry is quite young in our country. It was from the year 1984 only
when people started importing Circular Knitting Machines to India. The growth in this
industry was tremendous. Now this is open for all small and large industries and as such
now knitting industry looks towards large scale industry to set up big units. The knitting
industry in India is concentrated in Tirupur (Tamilnadu) and Ludhiana (Punjab). Tirupur
produces 60 percent of India's total knitwear exports. Knitted garments account for
almost 32 percent of all exported garments from India.
Indian Textile and Clothing industry importance lies in the fact that with the
market size, it is the 2nd largest industry in India. It contributes 20% to the total industrial
output and 8% to GDP and about 31% to the country’s export earnings. It provides
employment to about 40 million persons i.e. 18% of the country’s workforce. Though
during the last two decades, the Knitting Industry in India has grown up magnificently.
