ASSIGNMENT No. 1 in POWER PLANT ENGINEERING

1. An ideal diesel engine has a compression ratio of 20 and has uses air as the working fluid.
The state at the beginning of the compression process air is at 95kPa and 20 ℃ . If the
maximum temperature in the cycle is not to exceed 2200K, determine:
a.) The thermal efficiency
b.) The mean effective pressure
Assume constant specific heat for air at room temperature.

Solution:
a.) The thermal efficiency.

2. A four cylinder 4.5li diesel engine which operates on an ideal diesel cycle has a
compression ratio of 17 and cut-off ratio of 2.2. air is at 27C and 97kPa at the beginning
of compression process. Using the cold air standard assumption determine how much
power the engine will deliver at 1500 rpm.

Solution:

3. A six cylinder four stroke diesel engine with 76 mm bore x 89 mm stroke run in the
laboratory at 200 rpm. When it was found that the engine was 153.5 N-m with all the
cylinder firing but 123 N-m when one cylinder was cut. The engine consume 12.2kg of
fuel per hour with a heating value of 54,120 kJ/kg of air at 15.6℃ . Determine the
indicated power.

Solution:
Determine the indicated power.

4. During a test on a diesel engine used for driving a generator , the following observation
were made: the output of the generator was 215 A at 210V. the efficiency of generator
being 85%. The quantity of fuel supplied to the engine was 11.8 kg/hr. the calorific value
of fuel being 43MJ/kg. the air-fuel ratio was 18:1. The exhaust gases were passed through
an exhaust gas calorimeter for which the following observation were made; water
circulated through the calorimeter= 560li/hr; temperautre rise of water is 38C.
temperature of exhaust gases at exit from calorimeter is 97C; specific heat of exhaust
gases is 1.04 kJ/kg-K. Ambient temperature is 30C. If the heat lost to the jacket cooling
water is 32% of the total energy released by combustion; draw up an energy balance sheet
of the engine.

Solution:
5. A certain diesel engine with the following specification; 8 cylinder, 400mm x 600mm,
four stroke cycle has a fuel consumption of 0.60lbs/hr-hp based on 19100BTU/lb. Engine
speed was 280 rpm with an indicated mean effective pressure of 130 psi. If the jacket
water carries away an estimated 25% of the heat supplied, find its capacity(GPM)
required if the allowable rise is 40F.

Solution:
