1. Classify the following as motion along a straight line, circular or oscillatory motion:
(i) Motion of your hands while running - Oscillatory motion.
(ii) Motion of a horse pulling a cart on a straight road - Straight line motion.
(iii) Motion of a child in a merry-go-round - Circular motion.
(iv) Motion of a child on a see-saw - Oscillatory motion.
(v) Motion of the hammer of an electric bell - Oscillatory motion.
(vi) Motion of a train on a straight bridge - Straight line motion.
3. A simple pendulum takes 32 s to complete 20 oscillations. What is the time period of the pendulum?
A.

4. The distance between two stations is 240 km. A train takes 4 hours to cover this distance.
Calculate the speed of the train.
A.

𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑛 (𝑣) =
𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝑡𝑎𝑘𝑒𝑛 (𝑡)

5. The odometer of a car reads 57321.0 km when the clock shows the time 08:30 AM. What is
the distance moved by the car, if at 08:50 AM, the odometer reading has changed to
57336.0 km? Calculate the speed of the car in km/min during this time. Express the
speed in km/h also.
A. Distance moved by the car (s) = final odometer reading – initial reading
= 57336 – 57321
= 15 km
𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 15 𝑘𝑚
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑟 (𝑣) = = = 0.75 𝑘𝑚/𝑚𝑖𝑛
𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 20 𝑚𝑖𝑛

If 60 minutes = 1 hour then 20 minutes = 60 = 0.33 hours
𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 15 𝑘𝑚
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑟 (𝑣) = = = 45.45 𝑘𝑚/ℎ
𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 0.33 ℎ
6. Salma takes 15 minutes from her house to reach her school on a bicycle. If the bicycle has a
speed of 2 m/s, calculate the distance between her house and the school.
A. Given: speed (v) = 2 m/s, time (t) = 15 min = 900 seconds
Required: distance (s) = ?
7. Draw the shape of the distance (s) – time (t) graph for the motion in the following cases:
8. Which of the following relations is correct?
(i) Speed = Distance × Time (ii) Speed =Distance / Time
(iii) Speed =Time / Distance (iv) Speed =1/(Distance × Time)
10. A car moves with a speed of 40 km/h for 15 minutes and then with a speed of
60 km/h for the next 15 minutes. The total distance covered by the car is:
(i) 100 km (ii) 25 km (iii) 15 km (iv) 10 km
Explanation: In the first part, distance = speed x time = 40 km/h x ¼ h =10 km.
In the second part, distance = speed x time = 60 km/h x ¼ h = 15 km. Total = 25km
11. Suppose the two photographs, shown in Fig. 13.1 and Fig. 13.2, had been taken at an
interval of 10 seconds. If a distance of 100 meters is shown by 1 cm in these
photographs, calculate the speed of the fastest car.
A. From the two figures, green car is the fastest and moved 3 cm.
According to question, 3 cm = 300 meters
𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 300 𝑚
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑛 𝑐𝑎𝑟 (𝑣) = = = 30 𝑚/𝑠

14. How do you convert a value in km/h to m/s?
A.
1 𝑘𝑚 1000 𝑚 5 𝑚 5
1 𝑘𝑚/ℎ = = = = 𝑚/𝑠
1ℎ 3600 𝑠 18 𝑠 18
To convert a value in km/h to m/s, multiply the given value with 5/18.
To convert a value in m/s to km/h, multiply the given value with 18/5.
16. Write the similarities and differences between distance and displacement.
S. No. Distance Displacement
1 Distance is the length of the path Displacement is the distance in a
covered by a body. particular direction.
2 It is denoted with letter s. This is also denoted with letter s.
3 SI unit of distance is meter. SI unit of displacement is also meter
4 It is a scalar quantity. It is a vector quantity.
5 Distance is either equal to or more Displacement is either equal to or
than the displacement. less than the distance.
