In all of human history, art has mirrored life in the community, society, and the world in all its colors,
lines, shapes, and forms. The same has been true in the last two centuries, with world events and global
trends being reflected in the various art movements.

Introduction
Impressionism was an art movement that emerged it the second half of the 19 th century among a group
of Paris-based arts. The duration of the impressionist movement itself was quite short, less than 20
years from 1872 to the mid 1880s. Nevertheless, it had a tremendous impact and influence on the
painting styles that followed, such as neo-impressionism, post-impressionism, fauvism, and cubism- and
even the artistic styles and movements of today.
The name impressionism was coined from the title of a work by French painter Claude Monet,
Impression, soleillevant (Impression, Sunrise)
The term precisely captured what this group of artists sought to represent in their works: the viewer’s
momentary “impression” of an image. It was not intended to be clear or precise, but more like a fleeting
fragment of reality caught on canvas, sometimes in mid-motion, at other times awkwardly positioned-
just as it would be in real life.

Reflection:
1. Was the term “impressionism” fitting for this art movement? Why do you say so?
2. On a personal level, what struck you most about the impressionist style of art?
1. In the art piece I made. I tried to fit impressionism in it, but it was really hard. So I just end
up making an abstract kind of art. Impressionism is a difficult yet impressive prospect in an
art piece. It takes a lot of practices and trials in order to come up with such. But I think I did
my best, though it may look like a common art piece in other people's eyes. For me it is an
impressionism but not only that visible.
2. I was really amazed on how the artists can paint such art piece that can fit impressionism.
It's really wonderful on how they make small paint brush stroke visible in such a big painting. It
is also really awesome seeing how all the strokes they did just blend with each other and form
some sort of a pattern. But in all this results, I was really struck on how these artists painted
those strokes one by one, How did they even finish it? How long did it take them? The art piece
may look very extravagant and wonderful in one's eyes, but the artist's patience and
determination is the climax of these art piece.
