viscosity of lubricant = 16 Cp. Calculate: (i) Minimum oil film thickness. (ii) Coefficient of friction.
(iii) Power lost in friction.

7 (a) What are the various terms used the journal bearings analysis and design? Give their definitions in
brief.
(b) Design a journal bearing for a centrifugal pump from the following data: Load on the
journal = 20000N, Speed of the journal = 900 rpm, Type of oil is SAE 10, for which the absolute
viscosity at 55°C = 0.017 kg/m-s, Ambient temperature of oil = 15.50C, Maximum bearing pressure
for the pump = 1.5 N/mm2. Calculate also mass of the lubricating oil required for artificial cooling, if
the rise of temperature of oil be limited to 10°C heat dissipation coefficient = 1232 W/m2°C.
UNIT – IV
8 (a) How the gears are classified and what are the various terms used in spur gear technology?
(b) A spur gear made of bronze drives a mild steel pinion with angular velocity ratio of 3.5. The pressure
angle is 14.5 degrees. It transmits 5 kW at 1800 rpm of pinion. Considering only strength, design the
smallest diameter gears and find also necessary face width. The number of teeth should not be less
than 15 teeth on either gear. The elastic strength of bronze may be taken 84 MPa and of steel
as105 MPa. Lewis form factor for 14.5 degrees pressure angle may be taken as Y= 0.684 − 0.124/T,
Where T = No. of teeth.
OR
9 (a) Discuss the design procedure of spur gears.
(b) A pair of helical gears with 300 helix angle is used to transmit 15 kW at 10000 rpm of the pinion.
The velocity ratio is 4:1. Both gears are to be made of hardened steel of static strength 100 MPa.
The gears are 200 stubs and the pinion is to have 24 teeth. The face width may be taken as14 times
the module. Find the module and face width from the stand point of strength and check the gears for
wear.
