Risk Management in Physical Education

Every activity performed has an underlying risk factor. It is important to identify, assess and take
proactive measures in order to complete the activity successfully and avoid risks. The process of
identifying assessing and planning proactive measures is called risk management.

Risk management is a fundamental part of the teaching and learning process. It is especially very
crucial in physical education since this is one area where potential risks are very high. This is because
children get an opportunity to be outdoors, free in an open environment. As such children are likely to
misbehave in excitement. Many, at times teachers also get hesitant to teach physical education as they
are unable to manage the situation. If not clearly assessed and planned out this often gets risky and that
is where risk management plan proves to be the most efficient. It is important since it not only
safeguards students from injuries but also helps teachers to avoid any allegations of negligence under
their duty of care. It also makes the students responsible as they are aware of risks and learn to be in a
safe and healthy environment. Moreover it also gives the teachers the confidence to take physical
education classes since they are aware of the potential hazards and are in control of the situation.

Moving on, an effective physical education teacher as such will always assess and analyse risks in order
to have successful teaching and learning. The above can be accomplished using the risk management
plan. As per Fabiano (2021), this plan constitutes of four steps. The first step is assessing. Here all
potential sources of risks are identified, analysed and prioritised. For example, when assessing potential
risks an effective teacher will consider equipments, facilities, space, number of children, children with
special needs, weather conditions alongside his/ her own knowledge and expertise to give accurate
instructions and so forth. The teacher will then list down anything that may pose potential risks.

In transition, once the risks have been identified, the best methods will be then be selected to avoid
these risks. For example, if lack of space is one potential risk for a large class, then the teacher might
list out two or three course of action to minimize these risks. After examining each solution thoroughly,
the teacher may choose the best. After that, the teacher will implement that in the actual context.
Furthermore, the teacher will monitor the results, reflect and revise as necessary for future possibilities.
The above plan of action is indeed vital as it would help to ensure that all children are safe at all times.
All in one, risk management is a fundamental part of Physical Education since it gives students
ownership of their own safety while safeguarding them from any potential harm. It also keeps teachers
free from legal liability and provides confidence and pride of teaching children in a safe environment
thus strengthening the relationship with the stakeholders. The four steps of risk management as such
provides the most appropriate way to manage risks and must be followed thoroughly as the safety of
students is the first priority in any teaching and learning environment.
