Introduction

H.Y.P.E. Strategy or Home Yoked Physical Education strategies is an innovation

of the Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation or the ISPEAR in Central

Luzon State University to support Physical Education classes during the time of pandemic.

HYPE strategies are approaches in the modules painstakingly studied and produced by

ISPEAR faculty to deliver and transfer learning in their Physical Education classes. This

kind of strategy were formed and conceptualized especially during this trying times where

people are mostly staying at home. Inspired by and anchored in the World Health’s

Organizations’ “Stay Physically Active during Self-Quarantine”, this idea is a collaboration

of the ISPEAR Faculty whose goal is to transfer physical education learnings at the comfort

of each students’ own homes. This strategy considers activities using different available

resources common to the student’s settings/localities.

Lesson 1: HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF BASKETBALL

The game of basketball was developed by Dr. James Naismith in 1891 when he
wanted to develop an indoor game during the winter months for students at the School for
Christian Workers. His game was intended to utilize player skill to excel. The game was
originally played with a soccer ball that was thrown into a peach basket, and thus created
the appellation known as "basketball."

After brainstorming some new ideas, Naismith developed basketball’s original 13 rules
and, consequently, the game of basketball. The new indoor game was played with a soccer
ball, peach baskets, and nine to a side. This first contest is believed to have been played on
December 21, 1891.

Lesson 1.1: The 13 Original Rules of Basketball

1. The ball can be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.

2. The ball can be batted in any direction with one or both hands, but never with the fist.

3. A player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw it from the spot on where he
catches it.

4. The ball must be held in or between the hands. The arms or body must not be used for
holding it.

5. No shouldering, holding, pushing, striking, or tripping an opponent.

6. A foul is striking the ball with the fist.

7. If a side makes three consecutive fouls, it counts as a goal for the opponents.

8. A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the ground into the basket
and stays there.

9. When the ball goes out of bounds, it shall be thrown into the field and played by the first
person touching it.

10. The umpire shall be the judge of the men and shall note the fouls and notify the referee
when three consecutive fouls have been made.

11. The referee shall be the judge of the ball and decide when it is in play in bounds, to
which side it belongs, and shall keep the time.

7|Page
PE 2115-BASKETBALL

12. The time shall be two 15-minute halves with a five-minute rest between.

13. The side scoring the most goals in that time shall be declared the winner.

In the history of basketball, the highest-rated college basketball game seen on U.S.
television was the 1979 NCAA tournament championship game of Michigan State vs.
Indiana State, which featured Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. This was one of the best-rated
basketball games in basketball history.

Lesson 2: BASKETBALL TERMINOLOGIES

Le sson 2.1: BASKETBALL EQUIPMENT & F ACILITIES

Basketball Court Dimensions

The size of the court depends on the playing level. The size of the court for NBA and
College games is 94 feet long and 50 feet wide. It is smaller for High School and Junior
High.

The Backboard and Rim

The regulation height above the ground for the rim (hoop) is 10 feet, and the rim is
18 inches in diameter. Backboards are 6 feet wide (72 inches) by 42 inches tall, with the
inner square being 24 inches wide by 18 inches tall.

The Foul Line

For all size courts the 'foul line' is 15 feet in front of the backboard.

The Key

The key is 12 feet wide, and is the same for all basketball courts. The backboard
extends 4 feet out over the baseline into the key. A half circle of diameter 6 foot extends
from the foul line away from the basket to complete the key.

The 3 Point Line (Arc)

For NBA Basketball Courts the 3 point arc is 22 feet to the center of the rim on the
sides with a straight line extending out 16 feet 9 inches from the baseline. Past those points
the line extends out 23 feet 9 inches from the center of the rim.

Line Markings

All line markings on the floor are 2 inches wide and can vary in color.

Lesson 2.2: BASKETBALL TRAINING EQUIPMENT

The Ball
The most important thing for training is the ball. There are certain guidelines which
one needs to follow when buying a basketball. For practicing, one can play with a rubber
ball. For professional competitions, one needs to use an inflated ball made of leather.

Official size of a basketball is 29.5 to 30 inches in circumference for men’s game and
28.5 inches in circumference for women’s game. It should weigh 18 to 22 ounces. When
bounced off 6 feet from the floor, a well inflated ball should bounce 49 to 54 inches in
height.

Shoes
One needs specialized shoes when playing basketball. It should be able to give better
support to the ankle as compared to running shoes. The basketball shoes should be high-
tipped shoes and provide extra comfort during a game. These shoes are specially designed
to maintain high traction on the basketball court.

Lesson 2.3: BASKETBALL SHOOTING EQUIPMENT

The hoop or basket is a horizontal metallic rim, circular in shape. This rim is
attached to a net and helps one score a point. The rim is mounted about 4 feet inside the
baseline and 10 feet above the court.

Basketball Court

The basketball court is the next important thing for shooting balls in this game. The
court is usually made of wooden floorboard. The court size is about 28m x 17m according
to the International standards. The National Basketball Association (NBA) regulation states
the floor dimension as 29m x 15m. The standard court is rectangular in shape and has
baskets placed on opposite ends.

Backboard

PE 2115-BASKETBALL

The backboard is the rectangular board that is placed behind the rim. It helps give better
rebound to the ball. The backboard is about 1800mm in size horizontally and 1050mm
vertically. Many times, backboards are made of acrylic, aluminum, steel or glass.

Lesson 2.4: BASKETBALL COACHING EQUIPMENT

Uniforms

When one starts coaching a basketball team, the most important requirement for a team
is to have a uniform. This helps one differentiate teams from one another. A uniform
consists of a jersey (shirt), shorts, numbers on the front and back of the shirts for
identification.

PE 2115-BASKETBALL

Shot Clock

The offense is allowed a maximum of 24 seconds to have a ball in hand before

shooting. These 24 seconds are counted on the shot clock. If the offense fails to shoot a ball
that hits the rim, they will lose the possession of the ball to the other team.

Whistle
The coach or referee uses a whistle to indicate the start or end of a game. S/he can even
use the whistle to stop the play in the middle of a game. Whistle also helps to indicate fouls,
timeout, or out of bound balls to the players. In order to get the attention of the players,
many times coaches use the whistle to gather the players.
