Chapter 1

Introduction to the study

Chapter 1 contains five parts: 1) Background and Conceptual Framework of

the study; 2) Statement of the Problem and Hypothesis; 3) Definition of Terms;

4)Significance of the Study; 5) Delimitation of the study.

Background of the Study

Bokashi is an organic soil amendment originally formulated in japan ,where it is

widely us ed.it is a fermented organic fertilizer containing indigenous microorganisms
and nutrients which are beneficial to soil and plants. Practical advantages associated
with the use of bokashi include the rapid preparation time (oly2-4 weeks) relative to
traditional compost (6 months) and the reduced cost compared to commercial fertilizer
because it is manufactured from low-cost, locally available materials. Moreover, it is
easily substituted for appropriate chemical fertilizers with out requiring much additional
training. As such, it is an appropriate tool for farmers who are in the process of making
the transition from conventional to organic agriculture .The use of bokashi fertilizer can
became a stepping a stone as a basic fertilizer during soil preparation and also as a
supplementary fertilizer during the fruinting stage. Research with peanut crops has
shown that crops treated with bokashi fertilizer had higher growth rates, increased
nodulation and higher yield than crops treated with bokashi fertilizer (Yan and Xu,
2002).

Organic compost easily made using waste biomass materials and small amount

of manure available on the farm. The benefits of making compost include returning

waste organic matter and nutrients to the soil. Compost can replace the use of pure

animal manure in the production of bokashi, if manure is not available in suffiecient

quantities. Compost produced by the layering different organic materials in a pile and

allowing them to composed.

There is limited amount of scientific research which has directly investigated the

impact of bokashi fertilizer of indigenous microorganism on crop(Yan, 2002). There is

however ,a significant body of literature published in journals associated with the

discipline of agronomy , phytopatholog and evolutionary biology which investigates the

interaction between crop plants, crop pest and diseases, and beneficial microorganism

in the soil. There are a number of potentially beneficial interactions between soil

microorganism and crop plant which can be enhanced by the use of IMO. In bio-

control of applications, a number of microorganism having identified which are

reference to us “antagonist”. This are generally fungi which have the ability to hinder

the growth of a numbe fungal and bacterial pathogens of crop plants (weeden et. al).

The continous application of synthetic fertilizer, insecticides, fungicides and

herbicides and detrimental impact on the community of soil microorganism. Applications

of bokashi fermented organic fertilizer couple with FFJ, FPJ, IMO, OHN and FAA allowed

a significance increase in beneficial microbial activity.

This study will fill the gap of inorganic agriculture by conversion to organic

agriculture and can help poor farmers who lack financial resources because the cause of

producing bokashi fertilizer is minimal.

Conceptual Framework of the Study

This study conceptualized the researchers deemed to determined if the

bokashi fermented fertilizer in the fruit yield will have varied effect in the yield

performance of lacatan. The paradigm below shows the researchers' perception of the

relationship between the independent and dependent variables of the study.

Statement of the problem

This study aimed to find out the effect of using bokashi fermented fertilizer in the

growth performance of lacatan.

Specifically, this study sought answers to the following questions:

1. What is the initial height of the plants in the various treatment?

2. What is the average height of the plants in various treatment?

3. Are there significant differences in the average growth performance of lacatan

in the various treatments?

Based on the foregoing questions, the null hyphotheses below were

formulated:
1. There are no significant differences in the average heights of lacatan in the

various treatment.

2. There are no significant differences in the average growth performance of

lacatan in the various treatment.

Significance of the Study

The findings of this investigation may prove beneficial to the following individuals

and/or groups of individuals:

The Department of Agriculture. The personnel of the department may find the

results useful their extension and impormation discimanation compaign, especially on

growing lacatan.

The Agriculture Teachers/ Instructors/Professors. They may use the findings of

this investigations to substantiate their lessons on crop production specially the lacatan

production. They may also find the result useful in extension and research activities .

Agriculture Student. This study may provide them with more insight in their

chosen career especially growing lacatan.

Lacatan Growers. They may find the results useful in growing lacatan a more

information specically by using organic fertilizer in growing vegetables .

The Researchers. These researches have gained a valuable learning experience in their

chosen career through conducting this study.

Other Researcher. Data generated from this research may provide future researchers a

rich source of baseline information, especially in the field of raising vegetables .

Future Researchers. This study will serve as a basis for conducting further investigation

related to the current study.

Definition of Terms

For clarity and precision, the key terms used in this study were given their

conceptual and operational meaning.

Functional. The term refers to something designed to have a practical use

(Merriam –Webster, 2015).

In this study, the terms “ functional” refers to the leaves of the lacatan that is

marketable and eible.

Growth . this refers to a stage in the process of growing(Merriam- Webster

Online Dictionary, 2015).

In this study, this refers to the increase in height of lacatan taken from 1 DAT until 30

DAT.

Inorganic fertilizes. This is also known as a chemical fertilizer or synthetic fertilizer

which is artificially made in laboratories and contains all vital nutrients such as nitrogen,

phosphorus and potassium (Buzzle.com,2014).

In this study,”inorganic fertilizer”refers to 46
