Quantity of Water

To design Water supply system it is necessary to determine the total demand in a day/month/
year.
Certain Empirical formula and thumb rules are employed in determining the water demand which
is nearby to the actual demand.
Types of Demand
Domestic
Commercial and Industrial
Fire demand
Public uses
Compensate losses
Water Demand

IS:1172-1993, a minimum water

supply of 200 litres per capita
per day (lpcd) should be
provided for domestic
consumption in cities with full
flushing systems.
IS:1172-1993 also mentions that
the amount of water supply
may be reduced to 135 lpcd
for the LIG and the
economically weaker sections
(EWS) of the society and in
small towns
Fire Consumption

Example :
Moderate fire break out
3 jet streams simultaneously thrown from each hydrant
Each stream discharge is abount 1100 liters/min
City population 45lakh
If 6 fire break out in a day, each fire stands for 3 hrs,
Water requirement is calculated Q = 6 X 1100X 3 X 60 X 3 = 35,64,000 litres/day
Amount of water required per person will be 3564000/4500000 = less than 1 litre/person
Public use demand

Sl. no Purpose Water requirement

1 Public parks 1.4L/m2/day

2 Street Washing 1-1.5L/m2/day

3 Sewer Cleaning 4.5L/head/day
