131 Practice Problem Set 1

This document contains two practice problems involving heat conduction through hollow cylindrical objects. Problem 1 describes a hollow cylinder cut in half radially with different temperatures on each end and asks to identify the boundary conditions and simplify the heat conduction equation. Problem 2 refers to another problem in Forsberg but asks to complete the same tasks of identifying boundary conditions through equations and simplifying the conduction equation without solving for the temperature profile.

Practice Problem Set 1

❶ Consider an object made from a hollow cylinder cut in half along the axial direction as depicted below.
Its dimensions are inner radius ri, outer radius ro and axial length L. One side of the object is at temperature
T0 while the other side is at temperature Tπ.

Other pertinent information are as follows:

 constant thermal conductivity k
 well-insulated at the radial and axial directions
 steady-state conditions
 no internal heat generation

Identify all the boundary conditions by expressing them as mathematical equations.

Simplify the relevant general heat conduction equation. Do not solve the temperature profile.

❷ Forsberg problem 2-44

Identify all the boundary conditions by expressing them as mathematical equations.

Simplify the relevant general heat conduction equation. Do not solve the temperature profile.
