The learners demonstrate an understanding of
the prevention, detection, and treatment of
diseases affecting the circulatory and respiratory
system.

Most Essential Learning Competency

The learners should be able to infer how one’s
lifestyle can affect the functioning of respiratory
and circulatory systems.
(S9LT-Ic-27).

Learning Objectives:
1. Identify unhealthy habits and practices that
affects the functioning of both respiratory and
circulatory systems.
2. Cite respiratory and circulatory ailments
and diseases.
3. Identify ways of preventing diseases in the
respiratory and circulatory system
4. Appreciate the importance of healthy
lifestyle in avoiding such diseases.

The leading causes of death around the world are diseases

affecting the respiratory and circulatory systems. However, they
can be prevented simply by having a lifestyle that promotes
wellness. Circulatory and respiratory diseases begin to develop
with unhealthy living. Symptoms of this illness must not be
neglected, and an appropriate cure must be given immediately.
The best way to prevent diseases in the respiratory and
circulatory systems is to have a lifestyle that includes a balanced
diet, regular exercise, adequate rest, proper hygiene, and avoiding
vices such as cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking. Circulatory
and respiratory diseases can easily be detected with regular health
check-ups and physical screening.
Several lifestyle choices can affect a person’s risk of developing
respiratory and circulatory diseases. A Harmful lifestyle weakens
your system, while a healthy lifestyle leads to complete wellness.
Vices, stressful environments, and unhealthy eating habits can
cause various diseases, specifically respiratory and circulatory
systems.

Smoking - effects on your body

Nicotine is the addictive drug in tobacco smoke that causes people who
smoke to continue to smoke. Along with nicotine, people who smoke inhale about
7,000 other chemicals in cigarette smoke. Many of these chemicals come from
burning tobacco leaves. Some of these compounds are chemically active and trigger
profound and damaging changes in the body. Tobacco smoke contains over 70
known cancer-causing chemicals. Smoking harms nearly every organ in the body,
causing many diseases and reducing health in general.

Effects of smoking on the respiratory system

The effects of tobacco smoke on the respiratory system include colds,

tuberculosis, emphysema, increased risk of lung infection, and symptoms such as
coughing and wheezing permanent damage to the air sacs of the lungs.

Effects of smoking on the circulatory system

The effects of tobacco smoke on the circulatory system include increased

blood pressure and heart rate. It would also damage the arteries' lining that
contributes to arteriosclerosis (the build-up of fatty deposits on the artery walls).
Another is an increased risk of stroke and heart attack due to blockages of the blood
supply and coronary heart disease.

Effects of smoking on the sexual organs

The effects of tobacco smoke on the male body include an increased risk for:
lower sperm count, a higher percentage of deformed sperm, which may be due to
the effects of smoking on blood flow and damage to the blood vessels of the penis.

The effects of tobacco smoke on the female body include reduced fertility,
menstrual cycle irregularities, or absence of menstruation, increased risk of cancer
of the cervix, and miscarriage.

Other effects of smoking on the body

Other effects of tobacco smoke on the body include irritation and

inflammation of the stomach and intestines, increased risk of painful ulcers along
the digestive tract, wrinkling of the skin, tooth decay, hearing loss, cataracts,
discolored fingers, and reduced ability to smell and taste.
