Assignment no. 1
After reading the book of Ian Stewart about Nature’s Numbers, please do the following questions:
1.What is mathematics?
2. Where is mathematics?
In the book Ian Stewart wrote in Natures Number he just simply state that we can see mathematics in
nature he simply example the pattern of zebra or tiger and the how fascinating the shape of the snow
flakes
Mathematic in my world can use in many ways we can use in simple part of our life and also we can use
it to our experiment or discovering something new. Mathematics has very important in role in my world
it is like a tool that program to your brain that you can use in many ways
According to Ian Stewart, there are many patterns you can see in the nature like the stripe of any unique
animals and the shapes of any trees, grass, flowers or even the pattern you can see in the deserted
island, he also apply that in those pattern there are mathematical connection like he discus the number
connections in to flowers petals.
5. Present and discuss some other artworks and in architecture which applies the golden ratio.
The Golden Ratio is a ratio of 1 to 1.618, which is also known as the Golden Number. There many people
using these methods in painting, drawing or in there architectural design. The example of this is
Parthenon, the Cathedral of Notre Dame, the Taj Mahal and this according to the article of UG stretcher.
The explanation why they use the golden ration it’s just make the building balance for its heights, it also
allows for varying of shape and it contrast it also make the building aesthetically pleasing. Leonardo also
use golden ratio on his work according to the UC Art article Leonardo da Vinci was a huge proponent of
Divine Proportion; he applied it widely in his works and even drew the illustrations for the definitive
book of the times on the subject.
Symmetries are the quality of being made up of exactly similar parts facing each other or around an
axis. It is like a mirror to an object then combines to each other. The example of this is butterfly as
you watch the butterfly you can notice that butterfly has the exact similar parts facing each other.
Spiral is a curved pattern that focuses on a center point and a series of circular shapes that revolve
around. The best example is the snail shell, typhoon and vines(some) the simple reason is they
exactly look like mathematically spiral.
Typhoon has a mathematical why of its location, shape and pattern and according to Cornell University
Typhoon eye trajectory based on a mathematical model typhoon eye can not be totally determinated by
initial %conditions due to the effect of ambient pressure field ("steering" %effect). Finally, they propose
the parameter-adopting method so that one could correct the weather prediction in real time.
Hurricane also the same at typhoon it has also a mathematical why of its location, shape and pattern
Mathematics in society if very helpful in terms of science business or in problems in society, we also use
math in many ways in our life like calculating the typhoons range and power, calculating latitude and
many more. Math is like new programs we download to our brain to discover, calculate, solve, or just to
be use in normal life. Math is so important to our society or in our everyday life we just don’t see it but if
just widen your knowledge about math you see that math has many connection not just in our
philosophy but math is every in nature, space or in life.
