C. Write Short Answers:
Ans1. Animals need to breathe to get oxygen. Oxygen burns the food within their bodies and
release energy to do various activities.
Ans2. Animals need to move to search, protect themselves and their babies from being
hunted and build resting and breeding places.
Ans3. A baby frog or tadpole breathes through its gills. An adult frog breathes through its
lungs on land and through its moist skin in water.
Ans4. Herbivores like cows and goats have sharp front teeth for biting and strong broad teeth
for chewing.
Ans5. Some animals migrate to protect themselves from harsh weather, to search food and to
reach their breeding grounds.

Ans2. Insects breathe with the help of tiny air holes or spiracles whereas fishes breathe
through their gills. Gills are special organs that are richly supported with blood vessels.
Ans3 The special features of water animals are:
1. Fish have fins for swimming.
2. Turtles have four paddle like limbs to swim.
3. Penguins use their two forelimbs as flippers to push water and swim.
4. Frogs have webbed feet to swim.
Ans4 Insects are six- legged animals. They move in the following way:
1. Insects like ants and cockroaches crawl on their legs.
2. A grasshopper uses its hindlegs for hopping.
3. Water insects like water boatmen use their legs as oars for swimming.
4. Some insects have one or two pairs of wings and can fly.
5. Insects like lice do not have wings. They move by crawling.
Ans5. Snakes do not have legs. They have scales or plates on the underside of their bodies
which are attached to their ribs. When snakes move these plates act like feet and the ribs act
like legs. Besides plates they have strong muscles and a flexible backbone which help them to
move forward.

Ans1. None of these is a fish as silverfish is an insect and starfish and jellyfish do not have
fins.
Ans2. Both owl and ostrich are birds, but main difference is that an owl is a flying bird
whereas an ostrich is a flightless bird.
Ans3.A bat and a bird can fly but they are different from each other as bats are mammals and
birds lay eggs.
Ans4. Both dolphin and monkey are mammals.
