BEED – 2

CHAPTER II

Lesson 5: Memory Test (page 30)

1. What were the most important economic changes in the Philippines

during the 19th century?
 The opening of the Philippines to international trade, which resulted in
an increase in commercial activities in the country from European
governments, as well as allowing Filipinos to travel to other countries,
was one of the most significant economic transformations in the
Philippines throughout the nineteenth century.
2. How did these economic changes affect the live of Filipinos during
that time?
 The abolition of the Moro's slave raiding activities, which resulted in the
expansion of agricultural territories and the discovery of new frontiers.
The establishment of local elites, however, has created a divide between
the rich and the poor, which has led to an increase in crimes such as
robbing, abduction, and pillaging.
3. The Spaniard also provided educational reforms especially in higher
education in the country. Universities in the Philippines such as the
Ateneo and the University of Santo Tomas were requires to provide
secular courses to Filipinos. How did education help in shaping the
nationalistic consciousness of Filipinos during that time?
 The Filipino people learn enough information about their rights and
independence through education to fight the Spanish government, which
took their land and treated them like slaves.
4. Based on your personality assessment, how were these events in
the 19th century crucial to the formation of Rizal’s love for his
country?
 Except being from an elite family, Rizal had the opportunity to study not
only in the Philippines but also in other countries during the 19th
century, and this knowledge let him recognize that Spanish rule in the
Philippines was full of discriminations and uneven rights. Rizal worked
for our country to bring about change and to educate the Filipino people
from being illiterate to being well-educated.
Student’s Journal (page 31)

Reflect on the importance of a person’s context in his/her awareness of

the various problems in society. What are the different problems in your
community today? How do these problems affect your daily life? How can
these problems be addressed by an ordinary student or a citizen?

 Our country is currently in the midst of the Covid-19 problem, and we

need to make a lot of modifications, particularly in terms of adhering to
the government's health and safety procedures. We agree with it and
recognize that preventing the spread of the virus is in everyone's best
interests.

Lesson 6: Student’s Journal (page 36)

Reflect on why Rizal highlighted the story of the moth in the last
chapter of his Memorias. What was the message intended by Rizal
through this story? Is the moral of the story still applicable for today’s
generation? What does the light symbolize?

 Rizal's eyes were opened by the story of the young and elderly moth when
he was young. It encourages him to believe that death is unimportant as
long as one knows what is good and lives in the light. Even if
vulnerabilities are yet to come as a result of our advocacy, this story can
still be used today by fighting for what is right, the greatest good, and
walking in the light. The light represents goodness, bravery, and the
ability to battle evil.
Lesson 7: Memory Test (page 41)

1. Create a Curriculum Vitae (CV) of Rizal based on the discussion. You

may also use other sources in creating Rizal’s CV.

Lesson 8: Memory Test (page 45)

1. Enumerate at least five skills shown by Rizal during his time in

Dapitan. How were these skills instrumental in improving life in the
area?
 Business ventures- he conducted it to boost the economy in the area.
 Improvement of water system- conducted a survey to improved farming.
 Education- established schools to educate the people.
 Geography- land survey in Mindanao.
 Art works- poetry, painting, sculpture, and martial arts.

2. Among the many skills shown by Rizal, what do you think was the
most important in terms of its contribution to the nation?
 Rizal's greatest contribution to the country is education. Through
education, Filipinos gain knowledge and open their eyes to the fact that
the Spanish government placed a heavy weight on them, such as
discrimination and equal rights, which meant that poor people had little
chance to achieve in life.
3. In your personal opinion, can we consider Rizal as a genius? What
are our parameters in considering him as a genius?
 In my own opinion we can consider Rizal as a genius, because without
his qualities and capabilities, he would not have become a national hero
by educating the Filipino people and advocating for causes that would
benefit our country the most. He was involved in a number of community
projects that improved the area's economy and quality of life. By
constructing a school in Dapitan, he kept his promise to educate the
Filipinos. Rizal epitomizes his ideal of a true scholar and citizen in the
service of his nation, whether or not he was a genius by today's
standards.

Student’s Journal (page 46)

Reflect on the importance of not limiting yourself and what you can
learn as an individual. How can you try and explore different skills despite
having a hectic schedule as a student? What skill or field would you like
to explore if given the chance, time, and resources? How can you help
your community by acquiring this skills and expertise?

As a student and a future educator, I would like to explore and learn new
skills in the world of teaching by learning continuously and having prior
knowledge on different things that might ask by my future students so that I
can identify what are those significant matters that must be considered in
terms of teaching and on how to explain those complicated things to my future
students. Regardless of the distinctions these children bring to the table, their
individuality pervades the classroom in a positive spirit that welcomes,
appreciates, and encourages learning. This is the goal I'm aiming for, to inspire
our young to become self-advocates for their own education.
